Research Associate
Dr. Hotchkiss
Full-Time

The Research Associate
will be the project Lead for the Visual Data Project- Alexandria, under the direction of Dr. Robert Hotchkiss in the HSS Hand and Upper Extremities Service at HSS. The hands, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder are critical to nearly every activity of daily living. When injury or disease of the bones, nerves, joints, and muscles threatens their functioning, overall quality of life is at risk as well. Hospital for Special Surgery’s Hand Service is world-renowned for treating children and adults suffering from all types of bone and soft-tissue conditions of the hand and upper extremity.
Dr. Robert Hotchkiss specializes in the treatment of elbow injuries (arthritis and contractures in both children and adults), hand and wrist injuries and arthritis, and vascular disorders of the hand. He is Medical Director of Clinical Research and maintains an inclusive patient registry to monitor outcomes and adverse events.

The Visual Data Project- Alexandria

A patient registry is an organized system that uses observational study methods to collect uniform data to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition, or exposure, and that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical, or policy purposes. The incorporation of images as data is a necessary and fundamental change to improve verification, documentation, illustration, and education. Although images are often referenced in a research publication, the inclusion of the “essential” images that are context-sensitive to condition, phase of treatment and ultimate outcome can form the very basis of learning “that” and learning “how”.

  • This project is to build technology and processes that acquire, optimize, aggregate, organize and display images related to the care of the upper limb patient with injury or arthritis.
  • Coupled with methodological rigor and other features of clinical research, we will integrate the source images, their analysis and the reported outcomes of a variety of conditions.
  • The project lead needs to be a person with a strong medical-clinical background, preferably in orthopedics and musculoskeletal care.
  • Clinical research experience is required as the lead will be supervising clinical research coordinators.
  • Experience using RedCap and RedCap cloud and other clinical research platforms would be an advantage, though these platforms can be learned.
  • Research methodology, including regulatory compliance, IRB matters and research accounting practices will also be needed.
  • Because the system is being built, weekly interaction with IT developers, architects and data science professionals will be necessary.
The Project lead also needs to be comfortable in an operating room environment and in an outpatient setting interacting with patients, as research subjects, nursing, therapists and other physicians.
  • Some of this work is documenting novel devices that are approved for clinical use, but nonetheless are in the early phases of use.
  • Interacting with device and drug companies will likely be included in the activities of the project lead.
Because this is a new endeavor, the schedule of work will vary as the project's needs mature and move from the prototype to the production phase.
  • The ability to use improvisation, stepping in to do what is needed and unscheduled, will be common.
  • Develops and maintains SOPs and workflows.
  • Continuously reviews, identifies areas for improvement and works to develop and implement operational efficiencies.
Academic output, presentations, manuscripts and professional meetings will be a part of the work effort as well.

Skills:
  • 5 years of Clinical Research experience including regulatory and IRB submissions.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Clinical Trials
  • Orthopedic terminology is a plus.
  • Experience in study design, analysis, grant writing, and publications
  • Proficient in the use of computers and software, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Powepoint.
  • Experience with RedCAP; RedCAP cloud and EPIC EMR.
  • Experience with Imaging software tools.
  • Ability to analyze data and translate into both lay and scientific terms.
  • Ability to use technical ability to trouble shoot and work independently.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
Ability to read, write and follow oral and written directions.
