DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty and clinical fellows. The department is composed of 6 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, and Urogynecologic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Under technical supervision, the Repro-Neuroendocrinology Research Associate will perform experiments involving the molecular and cellular analysis of hypothalamic and pituitary cells in a reproductive neuroendocrinology laboratory. Incumbent will help with daily management of the mouse colony, including compliance with ACP and IACUC policies. Assist with analyzing, breeding, and sample mice & conduct surgical procedures. Design and execute studies under the guidance of the supervisor. Assist with performing molecular/cellular biological techniques including RNA/DNA extractions, DNA analysis, cloning, PCR, western blot, running gels, and transcription reactions.

Perform histology techniques such as brain and pituitary tissue collection, tissue cutting (using a cryostat), and preparation of tissue samples for microscopy analysis. Assist in running histological assays such as in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. Perform microscopy analyses. The position also involves assisting laboratory personnel with laboratory support, directly training undergraduate researchers or grad students and helping to orient new lab members on lab policies. Other duties include: ensuring laboratory safety, maintaining laboratory inventory, performing general lab maintenance, ordering supplies, and managing radioactivity compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology, and previous experience with molecular biology research techniques, such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, Western blots, making glycerol stocks, and cloning.

  • Theoretical knowledge of animal physiology, endocrinology, and neurobiology.

  • Demonstrated experience with cryostate or microtome machine to cut and process neuroendocrine tissues.

  • Previous experience and willingness to perform experiments involving the handling, dissection, and sacrifice of laboratory mice, including the collection of blood and tissue.

  • Previous knowledge and experience with histological assays in animal tissues, including in situ hybridization and Immunohistochemistry & experience with Grains counting computer program.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling & disposal techniques, & the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations. Previous experience in working with recombinant DNA, biohazardous materials, & toxic chemicals.

  • Good interpersonal skills to be effective in communicating & interacting with a variety of people within a large laboratory setting & in administrative components within & outside the University and the Ability to take initiative & handle responsibility in a dependent and efficient manner.

  • Experience with sterile technique, preparation of solutions/media, and basic molecular biology techniques.

  • Knowledge of rodent anatomy & neuroanatomy, mouse husbandry, and reproductive functions.

  • Solid communication skills (verbal and written) in order to interact professionally and effectively with faculty, staff and students.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must work with recombinant DNA, biohazardous research materials, and toxic research chemicals.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 - $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
