Context: The Research and Evaluation Team is responsible for supporting Barnardo's to measure and maximise the impact we have on children, young people and families, through robust insight, analysis and evidence, focused on the corporate strategy and our key enablers. It is a dynamic team which works with colleagues, directorates and services across Barnardo's.

Key working relationships:

Internal contacts: Colleagues in the Policy and Public Affairs Team, Head of Research and Evaluation Team, Research and Evaluation Leads, colleagues in Children's Services;

External contacts: Academic institutions and relevant policy and research networks, external researchers/evaluators

Job Purpose

  • To co-ordinate and develop Barnardo's approach to providing ethical scrutiny for research and evaluation proposals
  • To support research and evaluation activity around Barnardo's priority areas, as well as taking a lead role in carrying out research in other service areas
  • To play a role in the development of evidence informed practice and a culture of self-evaluation at Barnardo's
  • To provide research and evaluation support for the Head of Research and Evaluation, and Research and Evaluation Leads

Key Responsibilities

Research and Evaluation Activity

  • Produce high quality written outputs from primary and secondary research, in language that is accessible to a range of audiences, e.g. literature reviews, Barnardo's Quarterly Practitioner Survey report
  • Support the research and evaluation activity around Barnardo's priority areas, as well as taking a lead role in managing and carrying out research projects in other service areas. This may involve designing and conducting surveys, supporting Research and Evaluation Leads to conduct focus groups and interviews, transcribing data, and analysing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Carry out research activity in line with Barnardo's ethical protocols, including managing all personal data to ensure confidentiality and compliance with the Data Protection Act
  • Engage with managers and other colleagues in children's services, using consultative and participative approaches, to promote a culture of self-evaluation
  • Produce literature and evidence reviews to identify gaps in current research
  • Keep informed of relevant policy and research development

Barnardo's Research Ethics Committee (BREC)

  • Co-ordinate BREC and maintain relationships with internal reviewers and external researchers/evaluators
  • Recruit and deliver research ethics training to new BREC members
  • Review applications from researchers seeking access to Barnardo's staff and service users
  • Maintain and improve the way BREC operates
  • Raise awareness of BREC within and outside of Barnardo's

Supporting the Research and Evaluation Team

  • Support the team's production of high quality written outputs, including making summaries, editing and proofreading
  • Assist the Head of Research and Evaluation, and Research and Evaluation Leads, when workloads are high
  • Organise workshops, training, and other events where required
  • Such other duties as may be required to fulfil the objectives of the role
