Service Journalism Reporter

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/jsonline.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a high-energy, endlessly curious reporter to join our Milwaukee Connect service journalism team.

Our Connect teams are part of a new initiative aimed at growing audience by providing fast-paced, engaging journalism that helps readers navigate their lives, keep on top of local issues and trends, stay safe during public emergencies and connect with the community and world around them.

Our Connect team reporters live in the city or region they report on and have a deep understanding of what residents there care about.

Our reporters are SEO savvy, can spot high-interest topics using engagement tools like Google Trends and can work independently but also thrive in collaborative environments.

The position will be based in Milwaukee and will primarily provide content for the Journal Sentinel but could also produce stories for other Wisconsin and network sites.

What do Connect teams do?

Connect teams publish journalism that helps local markets grow audience reach and engagement measured by both page views and subscriptions based on four key focuses:  This includes key questions local readers are asking on search and creating service-journalism oriented content in companion to local topics in the news.

What’s trending and part of the conversation in the local market to help readers understand the importance/impact locally around national news?

Localizing national trending stories in a service-journalism way with content that relates to the questions readers are asking about breaking news.

Amplify breaking news coverage when local buzz or breaking is lighter. This includes local content relevant to reader curiosity, an engagement series or light accountability work. Replicable network evergreen, seasonal ideas.

Responsibilities:
  • Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics.
  • Works toward becoming the community’s leading voice in area of expertise.
  • Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.) Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Works with content strategist to evaluate what's working and what's not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos, videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years reporting experience, preferably in a digitally focused news organization
  • Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
  • Possess strong writing, reporting and multi-media skills.
  • Display excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
  • Be a constant generator of story ideas and able to produce content early and often during peak audience periods.
  • Have a knack for SEO-driven headlines and other audience-driving strategies.
  • Be nimble and able to adjust swiftly to shifting news demands.
  • Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check and drug screen.
