Job description

Currently Recruiting for Full Time Nights, 36 hours a week with a set 6 week core schedule, working every third weekend.

The ACE unit/1D (Acute Care or the Elderly) is a 21 bed Med/Surg unit at Blodgett Hospital. Our focus is on medical patients who are over the age of 65. Nurse techs are often drawn to 1D because of their passion for our geriatric population. Since we are a Med/Surg unit, we care for patients with a vast array of diagnosis including Congestive Heart Failure, COPD, Septic Shock, Acute Kidney Injuries, Delirium and many more. Teamwork is vital within our unit and the staff work to ensure sound communication with the whole care team.

Summary of Responsibilities

Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients.

Essential Functions:

  • Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.
  • Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
  • Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

Orientation and Training

It will begin with 2 days of training in a simulation center environment and 1 day of EPIC training with our Nurse Educators. These are prescheduled classes from 8 am to 4:30 pm. These in person classes will typically fall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday week 1 of employment. Because these classes are prescheduled, you must attend all full days, and we cannot reschedule any of the required dates if you cannot attend. Attendance is compensated, as it is required for compliance. You will have 6-9 additional shifts of orientation on the unit working alongside a preceptor. These shifts will be coordinated between you and the Nurse Educator. Once complete, you would then assume your core schedule for the unit.

In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need based with similar training. If they are outside of a unit with their similar training (like a med-surg NT going to ICU or HDVCH) they would typically just be acting as a safety attendant. But all typical units they are floated to would have very similar expectations and training.
