The Job


The County's Regional Parks Department strives to offer recreational opportunities for the enrichment of county residents and visitors while protecting the county's natural, cultural, historical and land resources. Regional Parks is recruiting for a Recreation Coordinator to coordinate, develop, and implement community programs and events.

Essential duties include:
  • Coordinate various science and nature programs including the Environmental Science Day Camp and other outdoor education programs.
  • Represent the Department in various trade shows and community events, as well as present workshops to community groups and schools.
  • Coordinate and plan various community events at Regional Parks, including Junior and Adult Fishing workshops and derbies, Movies in the Park, Doogie Poolooza, and Calico Special Events.
  • Research and develop new community educational program ideas, activities, and materials.
  • Train and oversee volunteer and part-time park staff.
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of marketing materials for all programs and events.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Regional Parks Department manages and maintains nine (9) Regional Parks throughout San Bernardino County totaling approximately 8,000 acres with one (1) Preserve and one (1) Regional Trail system. Each park offers diverse outdoor recreation opportunities in settings that range from metropolitan, mountain and desert scenery. Regional Parks offers opportunities for residents and visitors to host events or enjoy the beauty offered by the County’s natural and cultural resources. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Work Schedule: Employees are on-call as necessary and will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical: This position requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds as well as frequent walking, standing, kneeling, stopping, climbing, and navigating through uneven terrain.

Travel:
Travel throughout the county is required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing transportation and must be maintained throughout employment. The use of a County vehicle may be available; however incumbents may be required to make provision for transportation and to use personal vehicles (mileage reimbursement at current IRS rate is available). Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: One (1) year of experience in the coordination and implementation of youth and family event programming within parks and recreation or closely related employer.

Note: Closely related employers include youth and family event planning, nature and science programming, and resorts/hospitality.

Experience Substitution:
A Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Hospitality, Business Management, Environmental Education, or closely related field may substitute for the one (1) year of qualifying experience.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree or Certified Park and Recreational (CPRP) certificate and have at least two (2) years of experience in parks and recreational programming. Additionally, they will be self-motivated, an independent worker, and possess strong customer service skills.
