THE CITY OF PORT HURON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

RECREATION COORDINATOR

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To plan and supervise municipal recreation programming, supervise and train part-time personnel, coordinate activities and to perform any related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direction of the Recreation Department Supervisor and the Director of Parks & Recreation.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision is exercised over, seasonal and part-time personnel.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Plan and coordinate municipal recreation programming.
  • Train and supervise the work of recreation programmers, leaders and others engaged in recreation program activities.
  • Demonstrate techniques and lead a variety of recreation activities.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities at recreation centers, playgrounds, athletic fields, parks, and pools.
  • Provide information and answer, in a timely manner, any correspondence to promote the use of recreation facilities and programs.
  • Provide needed information to Marketing for promotion of summer, fall and winter programs.
  • Coordinate municipal program activities with programs or other civic groups and organizations.
  • Prepare staff and program schedules.
  • Actively seek out funding for programs through grants, sponsorships, collaborations and donations.
  • Assist in forecasting future recreation program needs.
  • Recruit and train professional and volunteer workers.
  • Oversee and assist in coordination of events, state licensing needs and staff training for Camp Palmer Summer Day Camp.
  • Perform related work as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Considerable knowledge of modern recreation principles, practices, equipment and facilities and ability to apply such knowledge in the administration of large-scale recreation programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations and methods of organizing athletic and other recreation activities including supervision of a swimming program, athletic and social activities, community youth centers, playground and other activities.
  • Considerable knowledge of the objectives and philosophy of municipal recreation programs and activities.
  • Ability to train, lead and coordinate the activities of recreation leaders and other employees.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare effective reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to deal effectively with department officials, other employees, and the general public.
  • Initiative and resourcefulness in handling problems and administrative skill.

An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation from a college or university of recognized standing with specialization in physical education, early childhood education, recreation or related fields required.
  • Some responsible experience in the supervision or administration of a community recreation program involving a multitude of activities.

Working Hours: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Evenings and weekends during scheduled events.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $47,000 annually
