Summary

Plans, directs, and coordinates activities concerned with inspection, repair, and maintenance of railroad equipment by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as requested or required.

  • Ability to maintain and repair locomotives with ALCO, EMD & Cummins engines. Maintain and repair railcars, Vintage Pullmans and older Freight Cars.
  • Ability to lead and teach team of mechanics on proper locomotive and railcar repairs.
  • Knowledge of basic workings of supporting systems including but not limited to Kitchen Equipment, HVAC, Automotive and Track Support Equipment.
  • Confers with department heads to establish administrative and operational policies and procedure for following federal and state rules enforced by FRA & CPUC.
  • Analyzes records of daily operations such as locomotive and passenger car inspections, repairs completed or schedule, or worker absenteeism, to maintain knowledge of department activities.
  • Confers with shop and yard supervisory personnel to stay apprised of daily work schedules and to ensure priority scheduling of repairs for rolling stock, buildings and equipment and vehicles.
  • Discusses inspection and repair violations with federal and public representatives to resolve concerns such as time of repair, repair cost, and methods of preventing future violations.
  • Monitors inventory of parts and materials and prepared requisition forms for items in short supply.
  • Analyzes productivity and budget reports to determines allocation of work force and equipment, and productivity of inspection and repair facilities.
  • Interprets policies and procedures for subordinates and monitor activities to ensure that policies and procedure are followed.
  • Oversees administrative matters such as training policies, budget allocations, and equipment replacement.
  • Monitors administration of safety programs, according to company rules and federal regulations.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb ladders and/or cars 100% of time.

Must be able to reach with hands and arms and / or use fingers to feel handle 100% of time.

Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift at all times.

Ability to hear warning signals and communicate with other employees.

Ability to see warning signals, rough terrain and equipment operations.

Competencies

Communication skills - All rail employees have to be able to communicate effectively with each other to avoid accidents and keep the trains on schedule.

Leadership skills- Ability to supervise subordinates and lead by example.

Mechanical skills- Must have the ability to adjust equipment when it does not work properly.

Work environment:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to loud noise, moving machinery parts, outdoor weather conditions and elements, airborne particles and fumes from gas, oil, and grease, welding arcs; and/or frequently exposed burns.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
