What Radiation Safety and Environmental Health & Safety contribute to Cardinal Health
Radiation Safety and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) manage programs to identify and mitigate hazardous conditions within the workplace and external environments. This function implements radiation safety and EHS programs, policies and procedures. Additionally, this function responds to incidents and investigates root causes, implements trainings and corrective measures to prevent reoccurrence of problems, and conducts audits as needed.

This role investigates incidents and liaises with engineers, operations, management, and regulatory authorities to identify causes and prevent their recurrence. This role provides training on safety protocols and maintains relationships with the community, environmental groups, regulators, and other stakeholders impacted by the performance of the organization.

Job Specifics

The person chosen for this role will lead the development and implementation of the radiation safety and EHS programs at the NPHS Indianapolis Center for Theranostics Advancement (CTA) radiopharmaceutical manufacturing sites. These sites produce and distribute radioactive drugs and medical radioisotopes in an FDA-regulated, current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) environment. Radioisotopes will include alpha, beta, and gamma emitters. Working closely with the operational teams, this role is based on-site at our Indianapolis Commercial Manufacturing Center.

This role is responsible for designing, developing and implementing radiation safety procedures, programs, processes, and systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements and to eliminate or minimize risks to the company, its employees, the environment and the communities in which the company does business.

This role will be the named radiation safety officer on the radioactive materials license. External regulation is primarily performed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Transportation (including the Federal Aviation Administration), and the International Air Transport Association.

  • Ceasing any and all operations which the RSO deems to be unsafe to employees, the public or environment, or activities that are in violation of federal and applicable regulations and the radioactive materials license, as it pertains to radioactive materials or transport thereof.
  • Reviewing radiation surveys in unrestricted and restricted areas to determine that dose rates and amounts of contamination were at ALARA levels during the previous quarter.
  • Having unhampered access to all activities at his or her facility involving radioactive materials to identify radiation safety problems.
  • Initiating, recommending, or implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Verifying the implementation of actions taken to correct radiation safety problems.

Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science, engineering, biological science, or closely related field preferred
  • Must be able to be listed on a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission-issued radioactive material license as the radiation safety officer and an authorized user
