JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Quality Control Technician
Reports to: Quality Lead and Plant Manager
Department: Roseburg Planer/Sawmill
Hours per shift : 8 to 12 hr shifts, with two 10 min breaks, and a 30 min lunch
Wage: $21.53-$22.90 hourly (shift differential .30 swing and .60 graveyard).
Position Purpose: Maximize product quality through consistent and accurate machine, product, and operator analysis. Works closely with production supervisors, maintenance, other Quality Control personnel, graders, grade inspectors, and machine operators. Enforces safety regulations and other company policies at all times. Ensures our core values (ACES) are consistently demonstrated in the way we conduct our operations and interact with each other.
Position Functions:
Working Environment: (1) Inside 90%, average temperature 70 degrees F (2) Outside 10%; extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 105 degrees F. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Fumes: Wood, Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Wood particle, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None
Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Rubber or Leather based gloves when handling dry veneer. (4) Approved Footwear.
Physical Demands: See the Physical Capabilities as listed below; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, bilateral use of arms and hands, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 30 lbs.
Skills: Must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works alone with little supervision. Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.
Safety : (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.

- Identify product quality and manufacturing issues. Investigates causes for these issues, makes recommendations, implement solutions. Responsible for scanner maintenance and accuracy throughout the mill.
- Familiar with the operation of all machinery and how each machine can impact product quality.
- Measures management system indicators for quality, value, recovery and production.
- Maintains KPI management system. Performs analysis and variance studies, both established and new ones that will benefit operations.
- Perform lumber grade checks and grader training.
- Verify sawmill quality standards through machine and operator evaluations and measurements.
- Keeps complete and accurate records. Documents and reports work accomplished to staff. Reports mistakes or errors immediately to Sawmill and Planer Supervisors. Assists with corrective actions to solve mistakes or errors.
- Raise quality awareness through training sessions. Explain issue of value versus quantity, and advocate quality standards with co-workers.
- Maintains and encourages high levels of communication between operators, supervisors, and maintenance.
- Act as a relief to any positions in the plant for breaks, etc.
- Relief Planer Supervisor and Sawmill Supervisor as needed (see job descriptions).
- Support and promote all company safety policies for lockout/tagout, Personal Protective
- Equipment, Hazardous Materials Handling, and SHARP compliance.
- Works with all employees on performance improvements and training/orientation of new employees.
- Be able to lift objects above your head up to 75 lbs.
- Climb ladders, climb over and through equipment to clean and calibrate equipment.
- Sort through green and dry lumber by hand; Pick up cants in the Sawmill; Roll blocks around for painting.

- Coordinate and facilitate cleanup activities during holiday shutdowns and cleanup projects as directed by the Plant Superintendent.
- Assist the QC Supervisor in monthly inventory of Sawmill and Planer.
- Attend administrative KPI meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
