POSITION PURPOSE:
The Intensive Care Unit Technician is a member of the Mercy Medical Center healthcare team and is under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse providing holistic, compassionate, individualized, and effective patient care by assisting the patient with activities of daily living, as well as, other physical, emotional, and spiritual needs consistent with the Mission of Mercy, Vision of Patient Care Services, evidence-based standards of care, and established policies and procedures.

SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:
Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Provides assistance in the physical aspects of patient care, technical assistance to nursing staff and assistance in providing a safe and organized critical care environment (See attached Scope of Service). Under limited supervision performs clerical and receptionist duties and observes the cardiac monitors. Assists in implementing the philosophy, objectives, standards of care, policies, and procedures of the department and Mercy Medical Center.

Customers include: patients, family/visitors, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff, vendors and volunteers.

8. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment in order to foster a positive public image for Mercy Medical Center.
2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.).
3. Displays effective communication with a polite, compassionate and caring attitude and demonstrates responsiveness to needs of patients and families.
4. Assists in physical management of critically ill patients.
5. Ability to understand and follow direction.
6. Clerical skills and ability to effectively utilize written and oral communication.
7. Legible handwriting or printing required.
8. Maintains BLS certification.
9. Demonstrates ability to interpret cardiac rhythm and operate monitoring equipment.
10. Assists providers with bedside procedures.
11. Demonstrates customer friendly behaviors. Promotes customer satisfaction.
12. Displays a caring attitude and demonstrates responsiveness to needs of patients and families.
13. Must be competent to provide care within assigned unit to the population described in the unit's scope of services.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Employee will work flexible hours.
2. In a normal 8 hour day, the employee must sit 2 hrs., stand 3 hrs., and walk for 3 hours at a minimum.
3. Employee's job requires occasional (6-10% of work time) crouching, kneeling, balancing, and frequent (21-50% of work time) bending/stooping, squatting, pushing/pulling, and reaching above shoulder level.
Job requires lifting and carrying frequent (21-50% of work time) 11-24 lbs., and occasionally (6-10% of work time) up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
4. Job requires simple and firm grasping, also fine manipulating.
5. Job requires exposure to radiation and biological vectors.
6. Must be able to see at a near vision acuity level.
7. Must be able to speak.
8. Must be able to hear speech.
9. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
10. May be exposed to marked change in temperature and humidity, infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Must be 18 years of age.
2. High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
3. OR technician or nursing assistant experience preferred.
4. Arrhythmia monitoring course preferred.
5.. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.
6. Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) will be required within 30 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter.
