The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Virginia School of Medicine, seeks applicants for a Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) Fabrication Supervisor to join its P&O team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all steps in the fabrication process are completed in a timely and accurate manner and that quality standards are met throughout the entire process. The Fabrication Supervisor will have advanced understanding of material properties, to include metals, plastics, plaster, CADCAM, and other raw materials and their application in the fabrication of custom orthotics and prosthetics.

The Fabrication Supervisor has additional responsibilities, which can include:
  • Managing overall operations of the P&O laboratory to ensure that all fabrication projects are completed in a timely manner and the space is properly maintained.
  • Supervising other fabrication staff, reporting to Operations Manager.
  • Monitoring product quality throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that it meets department standards.
  • Overseeing work schedules and deadlines to ensure that projects are completed on time and communicating delays accordingly with providers and supply chain.
  • Reviewing work orders to ensure that they are adequate for accurate and complete fabrication.
  • Coordinating with the Supply Chain Specialist to ensure that all raw materials and componentry are available and adequate par levels are maintained.
  • Creating designs for new products or processes that require fabrication.
  • Maintaining communication with Certified Assistants and Orthotists/Prosthetists during each phase of the device fabrication to ensure that they are satisfied with the progress.
  • Participating in any necessary training or certification programs to keep up with changes in technology within the P&O industry.
  • Assisting the Operations Manager with recruiting and training new fabrication staff, as well as continued mentoring of other certified staff about the laboratory, its equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Assisting with the determination of the cost associated with a manufactured device.
  • Ensuring a safe working environment within the laboratory and promotes "safety awareness" among all P&O staff that complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and University rules and regulations. This includes routine cleaning and organization of the machine, fabrication, and plaster rooms.
  • Maintaining understanding of functions of vacuum systems, compressed air system, and dust collection system. Communicating maintenance needs to the proper facilities management personnel.
  • Ensuring all laboratory equipment is in good working order each day, completing routine maintenance, refilling and safe storage of all hazardous materials, maintaining SDS forms for all currently used compounds, and providing this documentation during on-site accreditation or other surveys.
  • Coordinating with environmental and safety services to ensure all hazardous materials are managed safely and that all employees are equip with proper PPE.
  • Serving as a point of contact for anything relating to the fabrication area.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or associate's or bachelor's degree in P&O or related field.
  • Five years of orthotics/prosthetics fabrication production experience required.
  • American Board Certification (ABC) Certified Technician in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work comfortably with hand tools, heavy machinery, and advanced dust collection systems.
  • Must be capable of easily lifting fifty (50) pounds of weight alone.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a workday.
  • Visual acuity (near and distant) sufficient to fabricate or repair orthotics and prosthetic devices.
  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give directions.
  • General proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office software, and P&O-specific CADCAM software.
  • Familiarity with operating drills, saws, and other power equipment.
  • Fine motor skills to adequately repair and create orthotic or prosthetic devices.
  • Ability to participate in sustained activities for many hours in duration and in accordance with federal, state, and University Laws.
