Job Summary

The successful individual will be working in a research lab at UCSF dedicated to translational research in medical imaging and machine learning. Under supervision, the candidate will be involved in studying how computational approaches to image analysis can improve diagnostic accuracy in medical imaging, which is critically important across medical specialties. Responsibilities include working closely with the Principal Investigator, laboratory members, and collaborators to coordinate data science research projects; organize and maintain computational and clinical operating procedures; and coordinate communications for the laboratory (e.g. occasional website, lab calendar, and Twitter maintenance). Responsibilities also include data extraction/labeling, organization, and entry; database management, and data analysis. In close collaboration with the PI, the individual will assist with clinical study design, protocol management and coordination, IRB submission and management, and scientific writing.

The ideal candidate will be excited about management of scientific projects, organized and detail-oriented, and interested in eventually pursuing graduate study or medicine with a focus on clinical or translational research.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Arnaout laboratory studies deep and machine learning methods for biomedical imaging and related clinical data, with the goals of decreasing diagnostic error and developing and scaling novel phenotypes to drive precision medicine research.

UCSF is a top-10 medical center and a leader in cross-campus efforts to mine, harmonize, and analyze multi-modal clinical data for the University of California’s 15 million patients.

The Arnaout laboratory is part of both the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, where the aforementioned efforts are based, and the nationally ranked Department of Medicine. Projects focus on deep learning for medical imaging, and through collaborative work with intra- and inter-institutional partners, touch the electronic health record, genetics, and other sources of data.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and 1 or more years of related experience; and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs. These may include, but are not limited to, Box/Dropbox/Google Drive, Outlook, Zoom, Excel, Powerpoint, Qualtrics(or other survey tools), command line, tools like Calendly and Slack, Github, Jupyter notebooks, connecting to servers/cloud computing systems
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality, including adhering to all requirements and best practices with respect to HIPAA and data security
  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail
  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
  • Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques
  • Working knowledge of databases
  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, prioritize multiple projects while meeting deadlines in a timely manner, and demonstrate strong organizational and problem solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years post-bachelor’s work experience in biomedical, computer science, or related field, OR project management in a computational/engineering field OR relevant Master’s degree
  • Basic to intermediate Python/Pandas skills
  • Experience in the electronic medical record environment
  • Prior involvement with translational or computational research

Pay: $43,300.00 - $110,100.00 per year
