Job Summary
The Fostoria facility is a soybean crushing plant with a capacity of 77,000 bu/day. This is a union facility with an hourly workforce of 35 and a salaried staff of 14 employees. The Relief Shift Supervisor’s responsibility includes supervising the daily activities of operations units and hourly personnel. This position will mostly work Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, but will be required to provide coverage for the Shift Supervisor’s vacations or absences on various shifts. This position is also extensively involved in personnel safety, food safety, environmental compliance, and equipment maintenance. The physical requirements of the job require the ability to climb stairs and ladders, lift 55 pounds, walk long distances, prolonged periods of standing and sitting, computer work, working in confined spaces and from heights, working in extreme temperature conditions. Also, bending kneeling, and potentially working adjusted hours.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for minimizing risks to the safety and health of our colleagues and achieving safety, food safety, and environmental compliance
- Ensure corporate and regulated rail safety programs and policies are implemented and enforced
- Conduct safety observations and submit recommendations to management team
- Complete Job Hazard Analyses and submit near miss reports
- Determine safe and efficient operations for the shift that is consistent with management’s daily objectives
- Issue hot work & confined space permits
- Review SOP’s & implement operational procedures, and enforce company plans, policies, and rules
- Attend and participate in operations area review meetings, safety meetings, and daily production meetings
- Maintains relevant KPIs to measure success
- Participate in PE activities, especially in Continuous Colleague Development pillar
- Acts as a team player and contributes when needed, such as spearheading projects or taking on special assignments as requested by the complex manager or superintendent
- Using excellent communication skills, handle worker issues honestly and directly
- Evaluate employee performance and provide regular feedback
- Conduct monthly job cycle checks
- Provide necessary training pertaining to Operators in various departments
- Responsible for determining workflow and hourly colleague scheduling
- Maintains discipline within the shift and discusses the need for disciplinary action with the Plant Manager
- Develop understanding of the process and able to troubleshoot and assist in plant startup and shutdowns
- Inspects equipment and coordinates maintenance activities to avoid unplanned down time
- Submits work orders for machinery and coordinates repairs with outside vendors as needed
- Conducts and reports commodity inventories
- Maintains a good working relationship with the rail service provider
- Serves as backup shift supervisor when necessary
