Position Summary

Improve plant capacity and efficiency for all HAM Plants though process optimization and capital projects. Process optimization responsibilities will include analyzing existing processes to improve throughput, quality, cost, and efficiency. Capital Project responsibilities will include all aspects of capital project execution from initial scope development through startup and personnel training.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Dimensions of Job:

  • Responsible for assigned projects at the home base plant and other HAM locations – productivity, process, capital, expense and other.
  • Be a catalyst for continuous improvement endeavors across all plants. Actively engage all personnel to develop and determine best path forward with resources on hand or detail required plan for most efficient resolution to opportunities.
  • As required, supervise and coordinate contractor’s on-site work force to assure compliance with all plant procedures and policies and to assure effective utilization of resources.
  • Manage and support multiple efforts at the same time effectively.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure EHS&S policies and procedures are followed and documented. This includes strict adherence to change management, risk assessments, and method statements.
  • Develop processes and equipment with sustainability in mind supporting triple bottom line of People, Planet and Profit.
  • Work with plant teams (Operations, Maintenance, Quality, etc.) as well as HSM Engineering resources across plants while developing best practices for continuous process and product improvements.
  • Work with procurement to identify, select and manage outside contractors suited to perform required work. Ensure quality work is completed in a timely and safe manner by supervising contract workforce and performing housekeeping and safety inspections.
  • Support the ISO quality system as required ensuring compliance to the ISO 9001 quality standard and all HAM Quality Policies.
  • Execute all Capital Projects in accordance with the HEM Capex procedures.
  • Evaluate new processing and milling technologies.
  • Design and conduct test programs for new or modified products.
  • Provide Engineering support to HAM customers.
  • May have other accountabilities.

Major Challenges:
  • Completing assignments on time with the most effective use of resources (manpower, capital, expense) and a minimum of production loss while satisfying all stakeholders.
  • Managing project scope changes by preparing accurate project cost estimates on short notice, without the benefit of complete contract drawings or vendor supplied equipment information.
  • Visualizing the project goals and objectives from the business perspective and providing the required information and documentation to achieve success. Interact with other departments and provide leadership required to effectively execute the project to the satisfaction of all.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently and stay within budget and schedule requirements.


Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills

  • A minimum of a 4-year engineering degree at an accredited university with at least 10 years experience in manufacturing.
  • Experience which includes evaluating the performance of existing and new processes, making recommendations based on these evaluations, and successfully implementing process improvements.
  • Experience with structured processes and tools. Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, FMEA, RCA.
  • Must have the ability to manage time and priorities to effectively handle multiple competing projects with tight deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Ability to practice good management skills required to direct and supervise contractors.
  • Excellent communication skills and team skills.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD design.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend company safety manual policies, SOP’s, MSDS, and various production schedules / reports and engineering drawings.
  • Experience in mineral processing is preferred.


Physical Requirements

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
  • Office environment – will require extensive use of a computer including keyboard, mouse and other electronic tools which will require the use both hands.
  • While working in the plants, will be exposed to extreme heat, cold, humidity, dusty environment, vibrations, noise, etc.
  • Must be able to climb stairs/ladders, stoop, bend, and kneel while looking at equipment.
  • Must be able to be able to work at computer for several hours using both hands (taking intermittent breaks as needed) in preparation of required reports, capital project documents, completing drawings, etc
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to speak and hear to use Smart phone (talk, text and email) as needed and use a 2-way radio as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel by plane and/or automobile as business requires.
  • Must not be color blind (electrical requirements).
  • Must be able to don required PPE – hardhat, safety glasses, steel toed shoes, hearing protection, high visibility clothing (or vest), gloves or other specialized PPE depending on the job or circumstances.
