JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Juvenile Detention Officer

Cochise County Probation and Juvenile Court Services

Detention Services Division – Sierra Vista, AZ

Salary $33,616/year plus a competitive benefits package which includes membership in

Position is Open until Filled

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· A minimum age of 21 years and must be a United States citizen or have legal resident

status AND

· A high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate.

· Preference of one year experience in a related field, such as but not limited to, criminal justice, social work, and/or counseling.

· Spanish speaking preferred.

NATURE OF WORK:

Under general supervision performs work of average difficulty in the care and welfare of detained youth; performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Schedule availability must be open for rotating shifts and On-Call, including weekends and holidays.
  • Performs routine clerical functions such as data entry, answering phone calls, notarizing, providing information and limited instruction to customers, new detention officers, and on-call officers assigned to perform routine tasks in the center.
  • Supervises, observes, monitors, and documents facility movement and activities such as Youth Wellness Checks, Intakes, Transports, Travel welfare, releases, programming classes, and special events while maintaining Safety.
  • Prepares and maintains thorough and well-written reports, records, and logs, including daily behavior reports, incident reports, records, population counts, court records, detainment, and other detention logs.
  • Assesses youth for Detention utilizing the Detention Screening Instrument and Juvenile Court Service Data-Based program.
  • Processes intake, transport, the release of detainees, Fingerprints, and DNA Samples.
  • Provides effective role modeling and mentoring for youth involved with Juvenile Court Services.
  • Conducts inspections, security checks, and searches to include personal, cell, vehicles, and other areas for contraband.
  • Initiates verbal and physical interventions to respond to behavioral issues as required, including applying restraints that require physical strength when necessary.
  • Testifies at court hearings when necessary.
  • Escorts youth to and from courtrooms, into and off vehicles, and throughout the facility.
  • Transports detained youth to and from an out-of-county detention facility.
  • Transports youth to and from programming, events, home, and court.
  • Monitors and maintains a structured, caring, safe, healthy learning environment for the youth and families we serve.
  • Assists in developing unique plans to address youths' risks and needs.
  • Facilitate rehabilitative programming life-skills courses for the youth and their families in different county regions.
  • Attends all required training and meetings.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

· Must have skills in the areas of self-control, patience, initiative, courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

· Must adhere to the Arizona Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees, exercising sound judgment in personal and professional matters.

· Must have the ability to work impartially with individuals of various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

· Must have the ability to communicate with youth and the public in general in a courteous and respectful manner.

· Must have the ability to maintain a neutral attitude toward all youth, regardless of the reason of their detention.

  • Must maintain knowledge in the proper methods of restraint and juvenile control.
  • Must have the ability to respond to stressful situations calmly, quickly, and decisively.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers,

other employees; other agencies and the public, with demonstrated ability to work closely and

effectively with coworkers in a team structure.

· Must maintain confidentiality of youth information.

· Must adapt quickly in a fast-changing environment.

· Must have knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of confidentiality as related to informational databases, a detention facility, and physical security.

· Must have the skills to operate office equipment such as communications equipment, a desktop computer, and client database.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license within 30 days of appointment. Applicants must submit to a background check to include, but not limited to, a criminal history check, drug testing, and fingerprinting. The candidate chosen for this position must complete a physical examination, successfully complete the Arizona Detention Officer Certification Academy, and other mandatory training. Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within first three months on the job.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

· Typically performs duties in a secure facility and may lift a detainee, materials, or equipment of 50 pounds or less.

· Applies restraining techniques, reacts to physical confrontations and emergency situations.

Required to stand and walk for at least half of their scheduled work shift and physically.

· bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, and stoop when necessary.
