As a university botanic garden and arboretum, OBGA is committed to education in all forms and at all levels. The Education Officer(s) will play a crucial role in delivering OBGA’s mission to inspire people with the scientific wonder of plants, and in particular, the core strategy of Education and Engagement.
The Primary Education Officer(s) will be part the Education Team, and will contribute to OBGA’s work within both the formal and informal education sector. The formal education work includes: sessions for primary school pupils, training sessions for postgraduate students, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for teachers. The Education Officer(s) will engage schools with a varied programme of activities linked to science in the National Curriculum.
An important part of this role will be contribution to the Development Phase of the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF)-funded project which seeks to engage with new audiences at the Arboretum.
The informal education work includes providing activities and running or contributing to seasonal events such as fairs, and events for family and general audiences, and helping to plan, coordinate and oversee the Public Education Programme (PEP).
The Education Officer(s) will be part of the team working at both the Botanic Garden and Arboretum offices. The post holder(s) will be expected to work collaboratively with the Director and Deputy Director and other colleagues including the Collections Staff, to contribute to the smooth running of the sites.
The post holder(s) will work collaboratively with the Secondary Education Officer(s); for example they will support the Secondary Education Officer(s) in delivering the programme for secondary education, because secondary schools often need to attend in large year groups.
The post holder(s) will be expected to contribute to strategic decision-making and consider the role they can play in the development of the Department and its work, as well as that of the GLAM Division (Gardens, Libraries and Museums). The Education Officer(s) will also be expected to assist with other projects within the department and support the general administration of the Department.
