Job Description

Overview

Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

The Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group at PNNL is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to investigate Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE) for manufacturing of wrought products from a variety of aluminum alloys. The appointee will work with PNNL researchers to develop the ShAPE manufacturing process and to understand how processing conditions and subsequent heat treatments affect the resulting microstructure, mechanical properties, and other factors such as corrosion and cosmetics.

Responsibilities

This position is for an experimentalist and requires someone who enjoys being “hands on” with machinery to develop an industrially relevant process. Applicants should have a strong background in aluminum metallurgy. A sound understanding of the relationship between composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties is also required. Experience with severe plastic deformation (SPD) or conventional thermomechanical processing is also necessary.

The position holder will:
  • Plan, design, and conduct experimental research involving Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion
  • Relate microstructure and mechanical properties to ShAPE process conditions
  • Weave scientific discovery into applied research projects
  • Document scientific results in conference proceedings and peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, or related field
  • Understanding of aluminum tempers
  • Familiarity with aluminum recycling
  • Hands-on experience with severe plastic deformation or traditional thermomechanical processing
  • Publication record in the peer-reviewed literature
  • Ability to perform work with the level of quality and timeliness to meet required project and client expectations
  • Appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly articulate research objectives and outcomes.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The position holder will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments. Exposure to mechanical hazards, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
