Policy Officer
London - Hybrid role - 1 day on site

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Standards team in responding to enquiries and live policy issues relating to our guidance on professional standards for doctors. Great opportunity to get some exposure in this arena. The role is temp, with the potential of being extended. The company would consider a recent graduate who had studied Policy, Politics or a similar degree.

Main responsibilities

1 Supporting the development of evidence-based policy positions and giving advice on this to internal and external colleagues.
2 Drafting a wide range of clear and concise documents for internal and external audiences, in house style and often to tight deadlines. This includes draft responses to consultations or external calls for evidence, briefings for senior colleagues, and high quality papers and presentations to senior colleagues.
3 Developing and maintaining strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
4 Maintaining an accurate record of our work, following the required processes and procedures.
5 Representing the team and directorate at internal meetings, as required.
6 Representing the client at external meetings and travelling to the various offices across the UK, as required.
7 Applying and managing the relevant diversity and equality policy and practice relevant to the role.
8 Applying the relevant management systems, procedures and policies relating to risk management, health and safety, information security and business continuity, as required.
9 Any other reasonable duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Key skill 1 - technical knowledge and skills

a Understanding of the complex and challenging environment in which the company operates and the ability to apply knowledge critically and strategically.
b The ability to quickly become familiar with the policy, relevant legislation and the programmes of work of the team.
c The ability to identify, understand and clearly explain policy, strategy and legislation development that impact an organisation's functions including its operational responsibilities.
d The ability to research, analyse, interpret, summarise and present complex information in a systematic and coherent way.
e Ability to use MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint proficiently and creatively.

Key skill 2 - communications skills

f Ability to write clear, concise reports, papers, and other documents such as consultation responses and responses to enquiries using plain English.
g Ability to present complex information, policy options, and the arguments for or against a particular policy position fluently and persuasively.
Key skill 3 - interpersonal skills
h The role will involve working with key internal and external contacts. It is important that the post-holder has relationship management skills and professional credibility to quickly build positive working relationships.
i The ability to work collaboratively and supportively within Directorate teams, across wider business areas, and with external stakeholders.
j Ability to interact and communicate effectively with people at all levels, including senior colleagues and senior external stakeholders.
k Ability to influence decision-making by colleagues and senior managers.
l To ensure our services and contact with customers are delivered in line with the standards and expectations of the company customer service strategy.
Key skill 4 - organisation skills
m Effective time and project management skills are essential. The post-holder will need to demonstrate the ability to deal with the conflicting demands of a varied workload; and the ability to prioritise and plan the work to ensure that objectives and agreed milestones are met and a good standard of work is delivered.
n Ability to work on their own initiative; exercising good judgement about when to seek input from senior colleagues.
