Summary

The Yuma Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of Police Cadet. This position is designed for individuals 18 to 20 years of age who desire to become police officers. Police Cadets are provided with resources and training in a variety of areas of law enforcement, including Patrol Operations, Investigations, Evidence and Forensic Procedures, and Administrative Support while preparing to attend a police academy.

Under close supervision, those selected will participate in classroom training, on-the-job training, job shadowing and physical fitness sessions in a teaching environment. As Police Cadets meet the age requirement per AZ POST, the candidates are considered for transition to the police academy and have the opportunity to bypass the written exam and oral board interview.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Attends classroom training sessions and on-the-job training sessions.
  • Completes written, oral and skills proficiency examinations for a wide variety of required Peace Officer duties and meets or maintains required levels of proficiency.
  • Participates in physical conditioning training and testing, and meets or maintains required levels of physical fitness.
  • Adheres to AZ POST academy rules and regulations.
  • Assists YPD Public Affairs Unit by assisting with public presentations, various support duties involving media, public relations and community programs.
  • Assists with neighborhood policing, community service programs and community events.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent at the time of hire. Must be at least 18 years of age but no older than 20 at time of application. This is meant to be a temporary position that terminates upon the employee's 22nd birthday. Must pass additional AZ POST required examinations prior to being considered for an academy start date.

By the end of the training program:

Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Safe work practices and occupational hazards in accident scenes and traffic environments.
  • State laws and YPD policies governing management of property and evidence.
  • Geography, roads, and landmarks of City and surrounding areas.

Skill in:

  • Interviewing victims and witnesses.
  • Dealing with physically and/or verbally uncooperative, distraught, or hostile individuals.
  • Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Following and communicating verbal and written instructions.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field. Required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects.
