Job Summary
Performs skilled preventative and corrective maintenance on a wide array of machinery to include engines, generators, pumps, motors at the water treatment plant and related facilities. Inspects, maintains, adjusts other associated equipment including compressors, valves, tanks, shafts, and blowers. Determines cause of equipment malfunction or failure providing suggestions for repair to include parts and supplies. Follows the City’s safety rules and maintain a safe work environment. Employees assigned to the mechanic job family perform a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work performed requires attention to detail in order to prevent damage to equipment or injury to personnel. Verifies accuracy of all assigned inspection records, maintenance records and asset management system data. Work is performed independently and or under supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent based on the task at hand.

Salary Range $23.36 - $37.37

  • Performs preventative maintenance on a wide array of machinery including pumps, motors, generators, valves and piping systems.
  • Services, repairs and replaces, motors, pumps, valves, generators, power tools and plant equipment.
  • Work with manufacturer representatives, part suppliers and repair facilities
  • Be able to read and understand system drawings and technical manuals.
  • Follows the City’s safety and accident protocols.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance work on equipment containing Hazardous Chemicals.
  • Follows the City’s hurricane preparedness plan for emergency generators.
  • Required to work extended hours during and after hurricanes or other disasters and maintains 24-hour emergency contact.
  • Maintains work area, vehicles and shop in a clean orderly manner.
  • Exercises intertie valves with surrounding cities to ensure proper working order if necessary, for emergency or shortage.
  • Must be able to use a computer and the asset management system.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience in a mechanical, plumbing or electrical trade, preferably at journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Qualifications:
Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B with Air Brakes with an acceptable driving record or Valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record but must be able to obtain Class “B” CDL with Air Brakes within one (1) year of employment. (Must remain valid throughout employment.)

  • Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing and electrical repair procedures and related safety hazards.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of pumps, motors, engines, valves and other related machinery and equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of mechanics tools and shop equipment as it relates to repair and maintenance of water plant equipment.
  • Ability to use and operate specialty tools to diagnose and repair related equipment.
  • Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
  • Ability to use or repair small, medium, and heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine operation
  • Ability to read and understand system drawings and technical publications
  • Knowledge of basic alternating and direct current

Physical Demands
The physical demands involve balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, depth perception, driving, far acuity, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, near acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. May be required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the workers to shout in order to be heard above the surrounding noise level. The worker is subject to hazards includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places or exposure to chemicals. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The worker is subject to oils: there is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids. The worker is required to wear a respirator. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires me to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours Monday-Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm (nights, weekends and holidays as needed)

Note: During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
