Description:

Under the direction and supervision of the Family Medicine Residency Program, provides inpatient and outpatient patient care commensurate with the level of residency training and authorized responsibility. Reports to the Family Medicine Program Director.

Job Duties


1. Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission, core values, behavior standards, and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.
2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.
3. Develops and maintains a personal program of self-study and professional growth with guidance from the residency faculty and teaching staff.
4. Participates in all educational activities of the residency program and maintains at least the minimal required attendance at all educational activities.
5. Participates in institutional programs and activities involving the medical staff and adheres to established medical services policy and protocol with particular emphasis on recordkeeping.
6. Participates in hospital and residency committees, especially those related to patient care, quality and utilization effectiveness review.
7. Participates in residency related activities including but not limited to resident recruitment, student/resident education, curriculum development and resident social committees.
8. Assumes responsibility for teaching and supervising medical students as deemed appropriate.
9. Participates in and follows residency program policies and procedures related to residency education and behaviors throughout residency.
10. Sees his/her own panel of private patients in the Family Medicine Center (or other designated location) at least one half day per week under the supervision of the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty and teaching staff. Staffs other clinics as scheduled by the Family Medicine Center Director or the Program Director.
11. Provides call coverage appropriate for service requirements as designated by the residency program.
12. Provides clinical services required by Saint Joseph Health System and the program as designated.
13. Satisfactorily completes all rotational requirements for resident physicians as required by the program, as well as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and/or the American Osteopathic Association or Osteopathic Residency.
14. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

Education: Graduate of an accredited medical school. Must obtain and maintain a valid temporary or permanent medical permit for the State of Indiana.

Licensure/Certification: Indiana Temporary Medical Permit. Resident may participate in non-patient care activities during orientation if they have a pending medical permit in the state of Indiana. Once the permit becomes active, a resident may engage in patient care.

Experience: Four years of medical school at an accredited medical school.

Complexity: High level of complex activities requiring independent thinking and problem solving. Potential for significant stress levels due to the demand for services and management of seriously ill patients. Sustained mental attention required often under difficult and distracting circumstances.
Decision Making: Impact of decisions is high.
Professional Behavior: Resident physician is expected to maintain the highest level of professional standards. Failure to do so will subject the resident physician to the hospital’s disciplinary process.
