Job Summary

Support the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer and health care team, including team physicians, in providing medical coverage and support for the delivery of an integrated health care system to student athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics sport programs. Responsible for administrative duties such as medical record management, risk management, overseeing rehabilitation programs with the assistance of a full-time assistant athletic trainer.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Medical Care and Coverage of Student-Athletes

    • Provide prevention, evaluation, care and rehabilitation services to student-athletes for all athletically related injuries and illnesses sustained during practices and athletic competition
    • Provide medical coverage and care for assigned men’s and women’s athletic teams, specifically Track and Cross Country, coordinate pre-practice, practice, post-practice and athletic team competition medical needs. Coverage may also include other activities as assigned.
    • Provide daily instruction, scheduling and specific work assignments relating to pre-practice, practice, post-practice and athletic team competition needs to fellow cross country and track athletic training staff as needed.
    • Communicate with all needed parties on injury and illness information including student-athletes, parents, physicians, mental health providers, administration, fellow athletic training staff, coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff, and sports nutrition staff.
    • Coordinate and supervise medical services with the athletic training staff, team physicians, and paramedic services for practices and home competition.
    • Utilize current manual therapy, modality and rehabilitation equipment and techniques as needed and based on clinical judgement.
    • Provide yearly physical examinations for incoming student athletes emphasizing evaluation and prevention.
    • Coordination and transportation of student-athletes to and from physician appointments.
  • Administration, Documentation and Development

    • Provide daily instruction and specific work assignments relating to pre-practice, practice, post-practice and athletic team competition needs to fellow cross country and track athletic training staff as needed.
    • Mentor, advise, and provide professional guidance to fellow athletic training staff and visiting athletic trainers as it relates to professional development.
    • Collaborate with fellow athletic training staff on delegated administrative items and actions groups
    • Maintain and document medical records, rehabilitation programs and reconditioning programs of student-athletes’ injuries and illnesses within electronic medical record system (EMR).
    • Assist in coordination of insurance information and coverage between student-athletes, insurance coordinator and providers.
    • Assist the Director of Sports Medicine in policy and procedures review for the Sports Medicine Department. Review, evaluate and make recommendations on an ongoing basis relative to policies, procedures and health care issues for the student athletes.
    • Assist in the oversight, daily operation, and maintenance of athletic training facilities.
  • Collaborate with other student-athlete support groups in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics

    • Collaborate with the strength and conditioning, sports nutrition and sport coaching staff in developing reconditioning, performance and wellness programming.
    • Collaborate with support groups to develop integrated programming and education to student-athletes to optimize performance and wellness.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: • Required: Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field Experience: • Required: Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer, five years in a collegiate setting. High moral and ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Preferred: Previous experience as a supervisor or preceptor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • • Maintain knowledge of, and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that related to this position is required. • Maintain NATABOC certification and state licensure through regular attendance of continuing education programs and conferences. • Maintain Occupational and Safety Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for the DIA (Department of Intercollegiate Athletics) Sports Medicine Department • Knowledge of concussion testing and evaluations as it relates to the health of male and female student-athletes and use as needed utilizing clinical judgement in coordination with medical supervision.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/16/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
