General Information & Responsibilities

The Athletic Trainer reports to the Director of Athletics & Community Recreation, and is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring and adjusting all phases of the athletic training program within the department. This includes injury prevention, immediate care, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries; and administrative functions. The Athletic Trainer is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions and must possess the physical attributes consistent with performing the duties of the position. They will be required to work during prime practice hours and attend all daily home contests including evening and weekends, along with post-season travel events as needed.

Description of Duties

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

a. Identifies and administers care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries/illnesses to both male and female athletes at the college in accordance with the Illinois Athletic Trainer’s Practice Act.
b. Administer first aid to injured student-athletes.
c. Responsible for developing and facilitating a comprehensive Concussion Protocol along with initial baseline testing.
d. Monitors, identifies and treats all injuries prior to, during, and after all home athletic events and games in addition to providing training services for the home and visiting teams. This may include traveling with the teams during Regional post-season play.
e. Provides regular office hours, while planning and administering training services for student-athletes prior to, during and following practices.
f. Monitor and file all physicals for student-athletes to ensure compliance with the College and the NJCAA.
g. Analyzes and organizes all medical records of injuries, treatment and care.
h. Inspects and selects all protective equipment based on sound research design and the best possible safety features.
i. Evaluates and counsels student-athletes to seek appropriate medical assistance for follow-up and/ or surgery.
j. Monitor and select inventory, stocking and control of all athletic training equipment.
k. Organize and maintain all medical releases, waivers and detailed injury reports for insurance claims.
l. Analyzes and facilitates routine maintenance of the training room facilities.
m. Develops, implements and monitors all procedures for the training room facility.
n. Manages and administers all team practice/travel first aid kits per OSHA/ANSI standards.
o. Attend and participate in all college-wide committees as necessary.
p. Administers and maintains all CPR/AED Certification requirements for staff members of the athletics department.
q. Participation and facilitation in all future college wellness initiatives.
r. Develop and implement workshops or other initiatives to increase campus support of students.
s. Assist with supervision and oversight of all athletic department facilities and fitness center as needed.
t. Maintains a valid driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).

DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:
a. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director of Athletics & Community Recreation.
b. Must be able to communicate professionally with colleagues and community members in person, by phone and by email daily.
c. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to student-athletes, department personnel and college personnel.

Education & Experience

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)

a. Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Athletic Training or equivalent required. Master’s degree preferred.
b. Certification by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA).
c. Maintains Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification and teaching certification.
d. Licensed Athletic Trainer by the State of Illinois.
e. Prior experience in a secondary or postsecondary educational system as an Athletic Trainer or Graduate Assistant.
