Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma
Direct Supervisor: Building Official
Primary Work Location: Office setting
Physical requirements: This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of
force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Certification: Permit Technician I Certification within 18 months of employment.


Job Summary

Provide essential information and assistance with the permitting process
for building, zoning, planning, erosion and sediment control. Implement proper procedures as
well as other administrative duties within the Department of Community Development.

Essential Job Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do all of the following essential duties:

  • Assist by providing information to members of the public and permit applicants regarding
building permit requirements, inspections, and general requirements of the permit process,
obtain general information from customers regarding permitting needs
  • Assist the public in completing building permit applications
  • Respond to telephone inquiries regarding permits, building codes, other related ordinances,
local laws, and general inquiries
  • Process and issue building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other related permits,
prepare essential documents such as affidavits and certificates of occupancy
  • Calculate fees based on established fee schedules, monitor approval of plans by
other regulatory agencies
  • Prepare and disburse daily inspection information
  • Maintain computer files and manual logs on all building permits and related documents
  • Balance daily receipts and prepare appropriate daily, monthly, and other reports for submittal
to all required departments for accounting
  • Oversee daily operations and tasks of the front counter area
  • Perform related tasks as required


Knowledge

  • Functional and geographical knowledge of the County
  • Competency in Microsoft Office products
  • Basic knowledge of internet
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language is preferred, but not required

  • Good customer service skills
  • Organize and work on projects simultaneously and with interruptions
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce suitable results
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors,|
representatives of business organizations, other employees, and the general public


Abilities

  • Use of computers for data entry, retrieval, and report preparation
  • Proficient use of County’s automated permit tracking system
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance at work
