About the Position:

This position will be located at our Topeka Correctional Facility, in Shawnee County.

Compensation: $41,870.40 to $47,257.60/Annual ($20.13 to $22.72/Hr.)*

  • Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications. Though this position is unclassified, pay is equivalent to classified Pay Grade 24, Steps 10-15.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This position provides recidivism/risk-reducing programs/classes at Topeka Correctional Facility.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • This position is responsible to deliver Cognitive Based Intervention (CBI) skills-building classes at TCF, but also collaborates with others to broker co-facilitators and facilitators, including KDOC staff, contract staff, volunteers and community partners.

    • The core classes to be taught are Thinking for a Change, Moving on, Job Readiness, Improving Family Relationships and Substance Abuse Program.

    • This position is also responsible to build Advanced Practice (AP) groups of completers, and conduct robust effective AP groups.

    • Other classes will be this position’s responsibility, including classes of varying lengths/doses, addressing any area of risk/need, as identified by the facility, and directed by the supervisor.

    • Also work with R3 team and facility leadership and unit team and partners to ensure that programs are delivered at a time that ensure residents are able to participate in other opportunities, including private industry and other employment opportunities.

  • This position schedules, monitors, and is responsible for all administrative aspects of the classes, including working with unit team for a referral process; reviewing lists of offenders to identify potential participants; making placement decisions in classes, ensuring full use of all available slots; addressing readiness and responsivity; monitoring for quality/fidelity (and assisting colleagues at TCF and in other facilities/parole offices in monitoring their classes for quality/fidelity, as directed by the supervisor); tracking how many offenders start and finish; monitoring progress to reduce failures; ensuring program tracking codes are accurately completed; ensuring unit team, parole and mentors have feedback about class progress as appropriate; making necessary Athena entries; and any other aspect of the administration of the classes, as directed by the supervisor.

  • Build on skills taught in the groups through 1:1 sessions, interacting with unit team and multi discipline teams, all to ensure that the residents have the opportunity to continue practicing skills; that their behavior is the subject of effective responses; that motivation is addressed on an ongoing basis to continue building dose; and to ensure a warm transition and follow up and aftercare.

  • Work with KDOC staff (including unit team, parole, reentry, as applicable to work station/area) to ensure referrals are appropriate; to ensure matches are supported; to ensure mentor work is consistent with supervision and case management.

    • Trouble shoot when issues arise; serve as a resource to staff on how to support the mentor matches. Build capacity of staff to work with mentors as part of case management.

  • Recruit, screen, match, train, monitor, guide, and support mentors.

    • This includes making information about M4S available; processing applications; and monitoring and guiding matches for safety and effectiveness.

    • Ensure that mentors are focusing on risk reduction support including: transportation; community identification; pro social leisure time activities; housing; employment; family dynamics.

    • Help develop and deliver training, both basic and annual, for mentors. Also ensure mentors receive support, information, responses to questions, all as needed. Also ensure snap shots are completed, entered, and necessary follow up occurs based on content of snap shot.

    • Ensure mentors are informed about safety and security, and have the appropriate information and response as needed when issues arise with mentees.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Six months’ experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring activities relevant to the agency’s programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in corrections/criminal justice or social services field, or equivalent experience.

  • Independent work experience in human services assistance

  • One-year experience working with adult felons

  • One-year experience in training/skills development

  • Knowledge of principles of reentry management and risk reduction

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Ability to boundary span between areas of operation and good process coordination skills

  • Strong presentation skills

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must pass a criminal history records check.

Must be or become certified as an Offender Workforce Development Specialist, and trained in Thinking for a Change, Parenting Inside Out and any other class curricula/model as directed by supervisor.
