The Greenhouse Gardener will support this mission through the provision of high quality and forward-looking plant material for a wide range of facilities and programs, including native plants, pollinator friendly plants, plants for community gardens, and plants that serve as green stormwater infrastructure. They will work alongside the Greenhouse and Nursery Manager at the City of Raleigh’s greenhouse and nursery facility in all aspects of growing and propagating plants. This is a good opportunity to be introduced to the many aspects of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department.

Work Hours:
The work schedule for the Greenhouse Gardener is flexible. However, the minimum hours are 15 hours per week and the maximum allotted hours for this position are 25 hours per week. Our office hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm in the Fall/Winter and 6:00 am - 2:30 pm in Spring/Summer. This position must also be available to work weekends.

This role is a Permanent Part-Time position and contributes to the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System (LGERS) at a 6% employee contribution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Greenhouse and Nursery Manager with greenhouse operations, including watering, pruning, scouting for diseases and pests, taking cuttings, collecting and sowing seeds, and transplanting.
  • Maintain the greenhouse facility, including cleaning and sweeping greenhouses, moving benches, weeding, pot washing, and loading plants.
  • Assist with plant inventory and database updates, labeling, and data entry.
  • Supervise and direct volunteers with greenhouse projects; documenting, inventorying, and distributing herbicides.
  • Participate in gardening and maintenance in other city parks.
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision as well as a part of a team.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
The Greenhouse Gardener must have a minimum of a High School education or GED.


OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with plants in a greenhouse and nursery growing environment.
  • Experience with landscape gardening.

Additional Information

Skill In:

  • Being self-motivated and detail oriented.
  • Working independently and diligently.
  • Basic experience in computer operation and software systems such as word processing and spreadsheets.

ADA and Other Requirements:
The Greenhouse Gardener is a physically demanding job. The employee is required to maneuver down narrow aisles in greenhouses while cleaning, sweeping, trimming, weeding, watering, and moving plants. This position requires the ability to use repetitive hand motion, count, stand, walk, lift, kneel, stoop, crouch, bend, and lift.

Heavy Work:
This position is required to perform heavy work, which includes exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
The candidate must have the ability to work outside and inside a greenhouse environment in all weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold, and rain and snow.
