Catalent Pharma Solutions in Philadelphia, PA is hiring a Packaging Engineer. The Packaging Engineer under general supervision performs packaging engineering, design and development operations to support clinical trial materials. They will work with both customers and staff to develop clinical custom packaging ideas and samples.

This is a full-time role position: Monday – Friday, 1st shift.

This 206,878 square-foot facility, located in the Philadelphia area is Catalent’s global Center of Excellence for Clinical Supply Packaging. Catalent offers GMP secondary packaging and clinical labeling services throughout our global network. Packaging can be configured to hold a single product or multiple products as determined by study requirements. We offer manual patient kit assembly along with semi-automated and automated wallet sealing and high-speed automated carding to meet the needs of studies of all sizes. For temperature sensitive products and those with minimal to zero allowable time out of environment, we can perform secondary packaging in refrigerated and frozen packaging rooms or over dry ice depending upon your project needs. Using our Clinicopia global labeling system with its multi-lingual label phrase library we can design single panel, booklet labels or our unique Peel-ID™ safe storage labels for your studies. Single panel and Peel-ID™ safe storage labels can be conveniently reviewed and approved online via our Fusion portal before being printed and inspected at our facilities.

The Role

  • Deals directly with customers and staff to design functional packaging designs and recommends materials to run efficiently on production equipment.
  • Develops blister card, partition, and both paperboard/corrugated carton designs.
  • Creates preliminary graphic designs for blister cards and cartons.
  • Designs and develops tooling drawings, print specifications, presentation drawings and line layouts using CAD programs.
  • Supports Project Management by seeking tooling quotations and order tooling.
  • Responsible for print mat layout.
  • Maintains job folders with samples and related information in an organized filing system.
  • Log all drawings into design database for future reference.
  • Updates and keeps a running directory of all active jobs on the network for production personnel to review for set up information.
  • Other possible duties as assigned.

The Candidate

  • B.S. in Packaging Engineering or Technical school for Computer Aided Drafting preferred.
  • One (1) year equivalent work experience in packaging design.
  • Experience working with design and development of clinical trial supplies and/or commercial packaging design.
  • Limited knowledge of sample making, thermoforming equipment and clinical trials is also a plus.
  • Knowledge of sample making and thermoforming equipment is also required.
  • Must be able to use hand held measuring devices, run sample-making equipment, and operate basic mechanical machinery.
  • Solid concept of three-dimensional workspaces.
  • A good working knowledge of the following software packages: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) required, AutoCAD – used for the design of seal boards, relieved platens, label placement and assembly drawings, etc.- preferred, ArtiosCAD or similar software program – used in package creation. - preferred, Adobe Photoshop or similar software program – used during graphic development. – preferred, Tops Packaging or Cape – Palletizing software program - preferred
  • A working knowledge of Solid Works is also helpful.
