The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI) was founded alongside the Gloucester Police Department Angel Initiative in June 2015 and has grown into a movement of more than 700 law enforcement partners in 34 states. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that there were an estimated 100,306 deaths from drug overdoses in the United States from May 2020- May 2021. Law enforcement officers have a front row seat to the opioid epidemic and a growing number of police departments are motivated to adopt non-arrest programs that connect individuals with substance use disorders to treatment. Members of our National Recovery Corps will strengthen the ability of partnering law enforcement agencies to increase access to care and address addiction and poverty through non-arrest approaches. This program will place VISTAs in police departments to help build, strengthen, and sustain police-led programs to reduce and prevent overdose deaths and help more people with opioid use disorder get into treatment and recovery. This position will be at the North Charleston Police Department in North Charleston, SC and will serve as part of a larger cohort of PAARI National Recovery Corps VISTAs, spread across the entire nation. Individuals with lived experience with addictions, including those who are personally in recovery, are encouraged to apply.
Member Duties : Complete onsite orientation/training and identify community needs and assets. Research providers and agencies in the community to identify programs that residents in need can be referred to. Meet with intake coordinators at each facility. Develop and update a provider database regularly. Share with other service providers in the City of Charleston. Draft materials that can be provided during trainings and educational events. Work collaboratively with community partners to host events and trainings. Conduct outreach to neighboring communities to coordinate plans and share information. Establish a corps of volunteers that could continue providing direct service to substance involved residents and their families.
