Primary Function:


Under direction of the Eye Care Director, provide optometric primary care to a multicultural patient population as part of a multidisciplinary team in a Federally Qualified Health Center setting.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Provide comprehensive eye care to patients with eye-related disorders and conditions, such as diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and anterior segment disorders
  • Perform refractions and prescribe glasses and contact lenses to improve vision
  • Supervise student clinicians
  • Co-manage care with on-site ophthalmologist
  • Coordinate outside ophthalmology referrals for patients
  • Prescribe and refill medications for patients as needed
  • Works with the optician and optical staff to discuss lens options, frames types, and special coatings for patients functional needs
  • Participate in the peer review process, quality assurance and improvement initiatives
  • Coordinate with other internal and external providers to satisfy patient care
  • Perform other related professional and administrative duties as required

Minimum Basic Knowledge:


  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited School of Optometry
  • Proficiency with computers and EHR systems
  • Proficiency with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment (OCT, Fundus camera, visual field)
  • Strong decision-making skills, highly effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills


Experience & Qualifications:


  • Appropriate professional experience (Residency or 3+ yrs of experience preferred)
  • Valid Massachusetts optometry license
  • Valid Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration
  • Certification in Basic Life Support


Independent Action:


Under direction, performs work in accordance with professional standards, broad Health Center policies and objectives, proactively discuss unusual cases or situations with supervisor.


Supervisory Responsibility:


In absence of supervisor, provides direction to student clinicians and eye care staff.
