Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Nuclear Remote Systems group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Nuclear Remote Systems Design Engineer.

Our team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off!

Responsibilities Include:

A Nuclear Remote Systems Design Engineer applies engineering knowledge and experience to design or modify remotely operated equipment and instrumentation systems used in an inert hot cell environment for the purpose of conducting Post Irradiation Examinations, PIE, on irradiated nuclear fuels for Department of Energy, Homeland Security, Industry, and University partnerships. Designs require novel solutions to complex problems involving electromechanical equipment, precision measurement instrumentation, lifting and handling, and component fixturing. The Design Engineer models the design, sees it through fabrication, aids in; out of cell assembly, testing, in-cell validation, and project documentation to ensure the design will function properly and can be maintained remotely. Design Engineers work in a team comprised of Remote Process Engineers, Researchers, Program Managers, and Operations Personnel. Designs can be simple mechanical fixtures or complex electromechanical instrumentation systems with projects lasting a few days up to years to complete.

  • Provide engineering expertise and technical direction for assigned projects which directly support remote hot cell nuclear research and development programmatic work at the Materials and Fuels Complex
  • Perform design engineering for complex, one of a kind, precision measurement instruments and equipment remotely operated in an inert hot cell environment for the purpose of nuclear fuels research PIE
  • Configuration management of designs, instrumentation, and system documentation
  • Write and perform equipment testing and validation procedures
  • Works in a team environment with Remote Process Engineers and Researchers to develop remote equipment and systems to accomplish research activities
  • Uses sound engineering judgment on technical issues to support programmatic challenges
  • Interact with multidiscipline organizations, technical personnel, and mission support staff to accomplish scientific goals
  • Contributes to the development of new capabilities and intellectual property
  • Work is performed under general direction and may mentor junior staff

QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Requirements:

  • PR0300 – Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of experience or a Masters of Science Degree and 3+ years experience
  • PR0400 – Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear Engineering, or other related field with 8+ years of experience or a Master of Science Degree in Engineering and 6+ year of experience
  • Must be, or become qualified to INL Tech Staff requirements
  • Must be, or become rad worker 1 or 2 trained, as required
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship

Preferred Requirements:

  • Inert Hot Cell equipment design and maintenance experience
  • Familiar/Competent with drafting and 3D modeling software such as AutoCAD, CREO, Inventor, ANSIS, Solidworks, Autodesk, etc.
  • Ability to read and create Engineering Drawings, Prints, and Schematics for weldment or fabrication
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, GD&T
  • Experience analyzing stress and strain for different material types
  • Familiar with Engineering Codes and Standards
  • Experience estimating, specifying, and procuring equipment and components

Job Information

  • Salary Grade PR0300 - 220 ($107,520 - $177,336)/ PR0400 - 230 ($121,212 - $206,232)
