This position provides knowledgeable information, interpretation and guidance on various Alaska wilderness topics to all guests onboard to foster and create an unforgettable guest experience. The Naturalist Guide is consistently visible to the passengers onboard and helps to successfully, safely and memorably guide and execute passenger activities including, hiking, bushwhacking, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. This position is responsible for providing information and presentations that inspire and teach guests onboard about the wonders of Alaska, while fostering an appreciation for Alaska’s outdoor environment and culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work cohesively with other guides under direction of the Lead Naturalist to create a world-class, unique experience for all guests
  • Lead multiple outdoor tours in remote settings while ensuring the safety of all guests including, but not limited to, skiff tours, as well as kayak and hiking expeditions
  • Guide groups of up to twenty-five (25) guests safely in the field and on the water
  • Troubleshoot and quickly redirect when excursions do not go as planned to maximize the overall guest experience
  • Provide in-the-field, hands-on interpretation of thematic onboard presentations that fit within the division’s interpretive and wildlife programs using various interactive tools (i.e. maps, charts, guidebooks, history, etc.)
  • Deliver educational presentations to up to two-hundred (200) guests, as assigned by the Expedition Leader, that cover topics such as environmental science, history, etc.
  • Cultivate the guest experience by focusing on Alaska’s surrounding geology, flora and fauna
  • Encourage passengers to spend time on deck exploring and experiencing the natural surroundings of Alaska that would go unnoticed without direction
  • Maintain the cleanliness, order and function of all expeditions tools and gear including, but not limited to, kayaks, paddleboards, camping equipment, electronics and snorkeling gear
  • Assist in general shipboard tasks including, loading stores, laundry, garbage and luggage
  • Assist the Lead Naturalist with various excursion and educational needs, as deemed necessary
  • Responsible for the photography of all guest excursions and experiences, in order to preserve snapshots of their time in Alaska
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance among guests and crew at all times
  • Abide by all American Queen Steamboat Company and Victory policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Follow the instructions of the Hotel Director and marine crew during all safety drills and vessel trainings
  • Follow company values in responding to others in work situations

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • HS Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Bachelor of Science (in progress); Natural/Cultural History or other relevant field of study preferred

Professional Certification(s) or License:

  • Valid First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Responder Certified and/or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Copy of DD214, if Veteran status

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be fluent in English
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a pleasant and professional manner
  • Ability to interpret various environmental/education materials including, maps, guidebooks, microscopes, sitting scopes, etc.
  • Ability to develop digestible, informative and memorable presentations
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations
  • Ability to participate and lead multiple physical activities per day all while leading guests through the wilderness and maximizing their experience
  • Ability to use independent judgement to make quick decisions in a dynamic environment
  • Confidence when leading small groups outside the typical vessel setting
  • Ability to focus on safety during any and all situations
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Must maintain a neat, clean and professional appearance
  • Ability to work cohesively in a group setting with heavy emphasis on communication and teamwork

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of naturalist interpretation or environmental education in the field with similar duties and responsibilities
  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience leading small groups in remote field settings or on the water
  • Previous experience working collaboratively in a team setting
  • Previous involvement with oral presentations given to groups of up to two-hundred (200) people
  • Small cruise ship industry experience strongly preferred

Other:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing.
  • Pass pre-employment background check.

Working Conditions:

  • The majority of work is performed in a Marine environment in both indoor and outdoor conditions with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level and the occasion use of protective clothing. The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion. Positions both live and work onboard the vessel for consecutive port-to-port voyages during the regular season.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis; ability to work long hours each day
  • Ability to bend, rotate and reach frequently
  • Ability to carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 50 lbs
  • Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely
  • Ability to manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job
  • Ability to maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel
  • Ability to walk/hike multiple miles on all types of terrain and on moderate to severe slopes
  • Ability to kayak multiple miles
  • Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job
  • Additional requirements may be required depending on the physical needs of the role
