Michelson Laboratories is a leading food testing laboratory based in Northern California. Since 1970, Michelson Laboratories has provided efficient testing and analyses to an extensive spectrum of customers. We have a broad-based background and are thoroughly proficient in a diverse range of industries.

Our Laboratory provides a wide range of services and is staffed with industry leading chemists and microbiologists. We are expanding our laboratory in our Manteca location and are looking for a Food Scientist. The Food Scientist will be responsible for technical oversight of our chemistry and microbiology departments. The position reports to and works closely with the management team to achieve goals for analytical functions and to support critical customer deadlines and high-quality service/testing.

Responsibilities for Food Scientist:

  • Provide technical support to the Chemistry and Microbiology Department
  • Preparation of samples including sample enrichment, plating, grinding, etc.
  • Operating instruments for analysis including HPLC, VIDAS, PCR, etc.
  • Analyzing data, counting and interpreting microbial tubes and agar plates
  • Media Preparation and sterilization
  • Pick up samples at customer facilities, as needed
  • Perform internal audits of testing methods, review and update Standard Operating Procedures as needed
  • Help to ensure the overall implementation of the Quality Assurance Program in the department
  • Communicate and work closely with Quality Assurance Manager, Lab Supervisors, Sales Team, and Analysts to perform various tasks in daily operations
  • Responsible for timely and thorough review of data to ensure quality, accuracy, prior to deadlines.
  • Ensure Laboratory data and activities meets all applicable Method Criteria, Project Criteria, and the requirements of regulatory and Accrediting Bodies
  • Help guide in Troubleshooting and fixing Analytical Instruments as necessary
  • Ensure accurate and consistent testing through the validation of all current procedures and by developing, validating, and implementing new procedures
  • Resolve technical issues and address technical questions related to data and analyses performed
  • Respond promptly to customer and regulatory inquiries
  • Participate in meetings concerning Data Quality, Operations, Safety, Corrective Actions, and Implementation of new Policies/Procedures for improvement, etc.
  • Provide initial and ongoing Training and Coaching to Employees / Data Reviewers as necessary.
  • Assist with ordering and purchasing requests and reducing costs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Food Scientist:

· Master’s in Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology or related field preferred

-Valid Driver's License and clean driving record

· Minimum of 2 years analytical lab experience preferred

· Demonstrated ability to develop, coach, and mentor employees

· Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

· Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with minimal direction and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities

· Ability to organize, prioritize, and direct work activities

· 3+ years related work experience with analytical instruments preferred (LC-MS-MS, HPLC, LECO, ICP, ICP-MS, IC etc.)

· Possess knowledge and experience in analyses and data review

· Proficiency in common data software such as Genesis, USDA Nutritional data base, and LIMs for data evaluation preferred

· Ability to manage large customer accounts/projects and understand sense of urgency in a time sensitive industry

· Experienced in AOAC, FDA, SMWW, EPA, USDA, and USP testing procedures

· Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, ELAP, USDA
