Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and application of fair, equitable and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $27.09/hr. - $43.58/hr. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.76/hr. - $31.74/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, uses resourcefulness and adaptability to contribute to the success of the lab's technical operations. Executes analyses using established laboratory procedures and utilizes scientific expertise to modify procedures as needed. Works independently to supervise, assign tasks, and provide research support to student and more junior staff. May participate in research on sea-going research vessels. Runs a mid-size microbial oceanography laboratory including ordering, equipment maintenance, facility operations, training, and environmental, health and safety. Work performed is a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures without detailed technical supervision. Performs a limited variety of repetitive but highly specialized procedures, such as preparation of samples for isotopic analysis. May modify, vary or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects, or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made. Understanding and ability to teach the scientific principles underlying the research expected. Applies knowledge to assignments of moderate complexity. May provide technical support and subject matter expertise through project management responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 years experience minimum in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to design scientific experiments with appropriate controls.
  • Sterile technique for working with microbiological cultures.
  • Accurate and precise use of micropipettors.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years University of California purchasing systems and procedures.
  • 3-4 years experience in a laboratory setting.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred: Master's Degree

Work Experience:

  • Required: 2 years experience minimum in a laboratory setting.
  • Preferred: 1-2 years University of California purchasing systems and procedures.
  • Preferred: 3-4 years experience in a laboratory setting.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Driver’s License (U08): Must maintain valid CA DL, a clean DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 30% Management of laboratory operations - Manage lab operations and schedules, including but not limited to: Overseeing ordering of laboratory consumables. Maintaining a variety of small equipment and research support instruments (e.g. autoclave, ultrapure water system) through interaction with appropriate campus and off-campus service providers. Shipping and receiving of materials related to collaborative research and field projects. Ensuring lab conformance to relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations. Scheduling lab meetings and other lab-wide events. Providing technical expertise, training, and support on research equipment.
  • 20% Experimental Design and execution - Design and conduct complex experiments using marine microbial cultures without technical supervision, including adapting or modifying experimental procedures to meet the research project’s needs, troubleshooting unsatisfactory results, and establishing new conditions based on data analysis, personal expertise, and literature search. Independent project management of research undertaking and thorough understanding of scientific principles expected.
  • 15% Sample Analysis - Analyze samples for microbiological or chemical characteristics using established laboratory procedures without technical supervision, adapting or modifying analytical procedures to meet the project’s needs, troubleshooting unsatisfactory results, and recommending new experimental conditions based on analytical results.
  • 15% Student and Personnel Supervision - Manage student(s) and more junior staff, including providing technical support and subject matter expertise, managing schedules and overseeing day-to-day activities, and general project management, including assigning tasks. Train and advise graduate students in procedures and equipment.
  • 10% Participate in field research - Participate in sample collection at sea or in coastal research environments.
