Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and application of fair, equitable and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $20.74/hr. - $24.43/hr. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $23.36/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Lab Assistant II will perform technical procedures in the field of microbial degradation of bioplastics. The Lab Assistant will undertake a variety of established techniques for routine data collection, which will require specialized knowledge of certain instruments. Independent data management and verification is expected, and periodically reviewed. Assists with the maintenance and record-keeping of microbial cultures and the preparation of microbiological growth media. May assist Staff Research Associate in management of basic equipment, management of supplies, and other tasks related to the organization of the lab. May assist with oceanographic field research at sea.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in working in a lab setting.
  • Experience with Columbus Instruments respirometer.
  • Ability to work with microorganisms using sterile technique.
  • Ability to accurately use micropipettors.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, microbiology, environmental science or related field

Required Work Experience

  • 1 year experience minimum in a laboratory setting.
  • 1-3 years Prior experience with carbon-dioxide based respirometry using the Columbus OxyMax system.
  • 1-3 years Prior experience with oxygen-based respirometry.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employee Pull-Notice Program.
  • Satisfactory conviction history background check.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 65% Experimental procedures - Perform assigned technical procedures for data collection following established guidelines, including but not limited to carbon dioxide based respirometry and oxygen-based respirometry using optical detection.
  • 10% Data management - Recording and storing of data. Independent verification of accuracy and completeness. Preparation of data for periodic review by PI.
  • 10% Assist with laboratory operations - Under direction of senior staff, will be in charge of lab supplies, maintain basic equipment, and assist with lab preparation and/or organization.
  • 10% Supervise undergraduate students - Assist with supervision of undergraduate interns and their respective projects.
  • 5% Assist with field sampling - Assist with sample collection at sea aboard a coastal or global-class oceanographic research vessel.
