Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) & North Holmes Laboratory (NHL) Quality group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as an MFC Quality Engineer! Our team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our MFC facility with every Friday off.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop quality inspection planning using quality engineering principles.
  • Perform reviews of various facility, program, or project documents to provide inputs for quality items & processes and to ensure documents meet company quality requirements.
  • Perform direct observations of quality work performance as required to support various projects and work.
  • Guide quality personnel in directing quality control functions, inspections activities, ensure Quality activities assigned are performed and reported.
  • Conduct assessments/surveillances/audits. Act with peers and management to ensure that facility and program/project activities and related documentation maintain consistency
  • Maintain required training and proficiency per training plan.
  • Perform other work activities..
  • Assist in developing the quality program and implementing systems for programs/projects.
  • Provide technical expertise, assistance, and advice to program, project, facility management and personnel relative to compliance and implementation issues.
  • Provide training to peers and work organizations in quality technical aspects of the INL Quality program.
  • Function as an INL Quality Program ambassador and guide of INL’s quality program implementation for assigned work areas.
  • Provide Quality Engineering support for INL to ensure compliance with DOE, Laboratory, and customer specific requirements applicable to Quality Assurance Program.
  • Review designs, planning, safety basis documents, material requisitions, purchase orders, contracts, procedures, etc., for compliance with established INL Quality program requirements.
  • Advise line management and facility/project personnel of requirements and provide solutions to quality compliance and implementation processes.
  • Review and approve work control documents and input quality hold and inspection points.
  • Provide recommendations for solutions to repair and design issues, using ingenuity and innovation.
  • Provide program support to Engineers in structure, system and component (SSC) design, and development.
  • Provide guidance to verify applicable codes and consensus standards are implemented during design, fabrication, and construction of new/existing SSC's.
  • Provide quality program guidance to line managers for proper implementation of requirements and process improvement.
  • Perform surveillances, audits, and assessments, as assigned, to determine compliance with and implementation of company processes.
  • Perform audits of prospective suppliers to ensure suppliers capability to meet INL quality and engineering requirements.
  • Ensure quality program weaknesses and areas for process improvement are properly identified and resolved using the INL Issues Management process.
  • Mentor peers and engineers in developing, implementing, and maintaining INL quality program requirements.
  • As assigned, provide oversight and direction for INL Nondestructive Examination (NDE) personnel.
  • Perform as a quality program area technical point of contact and/or domain expert, as assigned by management.
  • Provide inputs of quality-related metrics and Key Performance Indicators.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a quality related technical field, plus 8 years of applicable Quality experience, or Master of Science degree in a quality related technical field plus 6 years applicable Quality experience, or PhD and 4 years applicable Quality experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain familiarity with common INL NDE area (e.g.., RT, MT, PT, UT, and VT) implementing processes.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain proficiency with implementing INL Quality Assurance Program processes. (e.g., PDD-13000, LST-1118, NQA-1, Software Quality Requirements, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASME Section III, V, VIII & XI, AWS D 1.1, and AWS D 1.6., and other national quality standards)
  • INL Quality Engineer qualification (must be able to achieve qualification within first 12 months of assignment)
  • Radiation Worker I qualification (obtain and maintain within first 12 months of assignment)
  • INL Lead Assessor qualification (obtain and maintain within first 12 months of assignment)
  • INL Quality Assurance Auditor (obtain and maintain within first 12 months of assignment)
  • Able to obtain and maintain Site specific and Work Organization specific qualifications as assigned.

Job Information

  • Salary Grade: 220 ($107,520 - $177,336)
