General Purpose of Job
This position is responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair on all types of electric meters and associated metering equipment and control systems used in a distribution electric utility.

Education
Minimum

High School or GED

Preferred

2 Year / Associate Degree

Major:

Electronics or related discipline from a recognized technical school or certificate from a vocational school.

Preferred

Certification as a Journeyman Meter Technician from an accredited metering apprentice program.

Experience
Minimum

Five (5) years directly related experience as a Meter Technician.

Preferred

Experience or similar work with an electric utility or related industry.

Education and/or Experience Notes
Job related experience may be substituted as follows: Equivalent position with a distribution electric utility, contractor or related industry with a minimum of one year experience as a fully qualified Meter Technician 1st Class/Journeyman Meter Technician.

Other Requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines, telephone, and fax machine and radio communications equipment.
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license for regular driving privileges of a company vehicle; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record as determined by SECO Energy.
  • Frequent business travel to all areas of service territory required.
  • The normal work week consists of five (5) consecutive eight (8) hour days, or four (4) consecutive ten (10) hour days, exclusive of meal time, Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight.
    • The Cooperative will determine if an eight (8) hour or ten (10) hour schedule will be used and shall establish the normal schedule of starting and quitting time.
    • Shift schedules may be changed by giving a 36-hour notice of the changed schedule.
    • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations and outside of regular assigned shift; ability to work overtime, on-call and availability to respond to call-outs and maintain an acceptable call out response.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.

Living Requirement
To ensure a timely response to call-outs, employees in this classification must live within a 40- mile radius from the assigned work location. Employees who live more than a 40-mile radius from their assigned work center must relocate within their first 6 months of employment or transfer.

All employees living within the thirty (30) mile radius and are subject to call-outs, are expected to meet the one (1) hour response requirement as stated in Article 10.5. Those employees living over thirty (30) miles but no more than forty (40) miles and subject to call-outs will be required to report within ninety (90) minutes. Regardless of the living distance, employees that are on-call and provided with a SECO vehicle are required to respond within forty-five (45) minutes as detailed in Article 10.5.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work at heights and from buckets; perform first aid, CPR and bucket rescue; and learn emergency response communication protocol.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment to accomplish goals and meet deadlines; to manage stress and pressure in a frequently changing environment.
  • Demonstrate the following knowledge and skills to include, but not limited to:
  • Effective communication skills including written, verbal and listening with a customer service attitude to effectively interact with employees, management, contractors, vendors and the public.
  • Knowledge of Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Automated Metering Reading (AMR).
  • Proficiency in personal computer operations with ability to enter and extract data; knowledge of MS Office products; ability to acquire knowledge of corporate computer systems as they relate to the position.
  • Proficiency in the programming, testing and repairs of electronic meters and ability to trouble shoot electrical circuits.
  • Strong knowledge of mathematics with a solid understanding of electricity.
  • Technical knowledge of all types of electrical meters, electrical recording instruments, and meter-related work practices, tool, materials and equipment; knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code and familiarity with the National Electric Code.
  • English is the primary business language. Second language in Spanish is desirable.

Essential Duties and responsibilities

  • Install recording instruments; perform power quality surveys; and analyze power quality investigations.
  • Build, test and commission new CT and K-base meter services; install wiring for CT and PT metering as directed.
  • Establish communications to capacitor banks and meters.
  • Test and troubleshoot load management devices.
  • Perform field testing of meter installations and replacements.
  • Complete paperwork and record keeping associated with job functions in a neat and timely manner; maintain required test documentation; and record accurate daily timesheets and charge time to proper accounts.
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts and pulling equipment as needed.
  • Thoroughly clean and refurbish meters, meter bases and all other associated metering equipment as needed.
  • Maintain good housekeeping of meter area and all outside storage areas at all times.
  • Maintain current knowledge of equipment, RUS specifications, OSHA regulations, GIS/mapping system and other operational and regulatory systems related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Assume responsibility and maintain assigned tools, materials and equipment in a safe and efficient condition. Maintains vehicle and ensures vehicle is stocked with proper material.
  • Ensure work locations are left in a condition appropriate for public safety and customer satisfaction.

The employee may occasionally work from bucket trucks, ladders, structures, high precarious places or confined spaces; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
