DESCRIPTION
Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a MESA Program Specialist.

Under the direction of the appropriate administrator, provides support to MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) & STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students, including student case management, facilitating events and field trips, and staffing the MESA center. Serves as a liaison between MESA and the communities and students of the District.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary Range (24): The monthly salary range is $4,087 - $5,111. There are five annual step movements; initial placement will be at step 1, unless approved by the Superintendent/President. Please see the current salary schedule here : MLCCD - Salary Schedule

Benefits: With no monthly premium contribution from the employee, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Holidays and Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn twelve (12) days of vacation and twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. Vacation leave increases with the length of service. There are twenty (20) paid holidays annually.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalPERS Retirement.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support student and institutional success by executing the following duties:
  • Assists the Director of MESA/STEM Success in coordinating program specific student activities on and off campus for MESA or associated programs; including but not limited to orientations, presentations, program activities, and promotional events;
  • Supports the Director of MESA/STEM Success with implementation of program initiatives;
  • Communicates with MESA students and potential MESA students regularly;
  • Tracks tutor hours and student awards, and processes relevant paperwork;
  • Assists with collection of program data for grant reporting;
  • May maintain area webpage or associated social media;
  • Staffs MESA Center; including answering phones, replying to emails, answering student questions, and scheduling appointments;
  • In collaboration with the Director of MESA/STEM Success, communicates with STEM faculty regarding tutor and other support services for their classes;
  • In collaboration with Director of MESA/STEM Success, communicates with Center, Learning Center, NASRC, Counseling, and other staff to coordinate tutoring and other student support activities;
  • Works with Director of MESA/STEM Success to design activities that support student recruitment, success, and transfer;
  • Maintains a positive atmosphere in the MESA center;
  • Assists the Director of MESA/STEM Success in assessing student needs, tracking student progress, contacting students proactively, and coordinating needed interventions to promote student success;
  • Assists students to access resources on campus for career planning and transfer pathways;
  • In collaboration with the Director of MESA/STEM Success, monitors the MESA budget, creates requisitions, and works with the fiscal department to ensure that expenditures adhere to guidelines;
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of correspondence, reports, documents, and forms; maintains and organizes records and files;
  • Operates a variety of office equipment including a computer and associated software;
  • Attends related meetings and workshops; performs other program duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Mobility: frequent sitting for long periods; frequent walking and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level; frequent balancing on varied surfaces.
  • Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequentgrasping to handle individual papers, write/take notes and feel individual objects.
  • Lifting: frequent lifting of papers, files, equipment and material weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work.
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.
  • Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent need to make decisions and concentrate; frequent contact with others; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including but not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB Test.

Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.

EDUCATION:
  • Required: Associates Degree
  • Preferred: Bachelors Degree

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
This classification requires the use of a personal vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires travel to other District campuses and area community organizations. Position may be required to travel locally to pick up event related materials. May be required to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
