Location: BETSY JOHNSON HOSPITAL, DUNN, NC

Position Summary:


Performs routine and complex clinical laboratory studies, such as chemical, bacteriological, immunological, and microscopic, for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease for patients of all ages. Meets technical training requirements and maintains awareness of procedure change, completes competency. Utilizes requisite equipment, instruments, and computer systems. Evaluates laboratory orders and specimens for appropriateness, then processes specimens according to protocol. Ensures proper labeling and storage of all specimens. Evaluates and reports patient results, using considerable testing methods, to physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff. Retrieves data, utilizes computer systems, organizes work, maintains work area and utilizes time to perform tasks beneficial to the department. Responds positively to change and demonstrates flexibility and teamwork. Updates knowledge, skills and applies competencies. Train new employees in the theoretical and operational aspects of procedures and evaluates their work. Acts as a resource for less experienced co-workers. Performs quality control procedures and proficiency testing according to procedures. Contributes to the maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies. Follows Standards for Excellence Customers Service and works to improve processes for improved patient quality care. Adheres to hospital and laboratory safety and compliance policies. Participates in the development and evaluation of new tests and equipment. May participate in methods development. Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Medical Laboratory Technician:

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Good knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Good communication, time management, and organizational skills. Excellent patient care skills. Professional demeanor and ability to multi-task. Ability to retrieve, communicates, or otherwise presents information in a written, auditory or visual fashion. Ability to work with patients or specimens using current technology consistent with department and hospital policies and procedures. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is by the spoken work. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Knowledge of regulatory standards- i.e. CAP, Joint Commission, NPSG.


Medical Technologist:

Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. If no degree, equivalent experience (1 year of experience = 1 year of college) working under a licensed pathologist will be considered. Qualifies under CLIA standard 493.1489.Certification or equivalent registry (ASCP, AMT) is preferred. Basic computer skills required.
  • Current BLS required


  • Medical Technologist (MT) - Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a medical science. Qualifies under CLIA standard 493.1489.If no degree, equivalent experience (1 year of experience = 1 year of college) working under a licensed pathologist will be considered. Certification or equivalent registry (ASCP, AMT) preferred. Basic computer skills required.
  • Current BLS required.



Other Information:

Light lifting up to 25 pounds, general motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling. Manual dexterity. Ability to speak plainly. Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors. May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
