Under the direction of the Lead of Digital Asset Management and Preservation Services (DAMPS), the Media Digitization Specialist assists the DAMPS Digital Media Services (DMS) team with the operation, maintenance, and development of a broad spectrum of audio, video, and film digitization and production technologies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Audio-Visual Media Conversion and Production Assistance

  • Digitizes, converts, and uploads audio, video, and open reel film media for fee-‐based and collection-‐related media projects as assigned.
  • Digitization post-production including editing video and audio files.
  • Reformats audio/video tapes, discs, and digital media files.
  • Provides video production assistance as a co-‐producer and camera operator for Libraries special events and other projects as assigned; Edit/improve images for video post-‐production as assigned.
  • Supervises quality control for audiovisual products according to established procedures and instructions.
  • Collaborates with the DMS staff to build multimedia presentations, slideshows, and other promotional media content as assigned.
  • Performs digital media asset management and supports digital preservation, archiving, and network transfer tasks, including upload of digital media files to short- and long-term digital storage solutions.

Equipment Maintenance & Repair and Inventory Management (in collaboration with the Media Producer/Director)

  • Manages maintenance and repair of audiovisual media equipment in DMS by scheduling and conducting in-house repairs and preventative maintenance; purchasing and installing equipment parts and supplies; and authorizing repairs and establishing maintenance contracts with vendors.
  • Consults with outside equipment services and engineers to resolve technical problems, schedule repairs, and explore media technology solutions.
  • Repairs audio and video equipment, tapes, and discs in-house when possible—e.g., parts replacement, head-cleaning, tape splicing, baking, etc.
  • Crafts, coordinates, and details DMS’ in-house inventories of audiovisual and computer equipment and software.
  • Designs the overall layout of the lab workstations, consoles, storage units, and furnishings to provide the most efficient and functional use of the DMS space.
  • Manages lab and auxiliary storage of all DMS equipment.
  • Provides ongoing technical support and reinforcement, staff training, testing, and troubleshooting of hardware and software at DMS’s multiple media production workstations.

Equipment Planning and Purchasing (in collaboration with Media Producer/Director)

  • Planning, selection, and purchase of audiovisual/media hardware and software for DMS.
  • Selects hardware specifications and assists Media Producer/Director on budget requests for the media workstation computers and external storage peripherals, and collaborates with OIT/DDS support staff on their installation.
  • Collaborates with DDS on planning of replacement schedules for DMS workstation computers.
  • Researches, provides product and technical analysis and documentation, and assists Media Producer/Director on proposals for the acquisition of top of the line media technology systems for DMS.
  • Design, installation, configuration, and upgrading of media-equipped workstations, including all audiovisual/media equipment and related hardware interfaces.
  • Consults and provides expert advice on media technologies to Libraries’ personnel at various levels of the organization.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $53,000 - $60,500.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent mix of experience and education from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.
  • 2 years experience with analog audio/visual equipment such as magnetic tape (reel-to-reel, cassette), VTRs (VHS, Betacam, U-Matic, HDV, etc.), phonograph players, etc.
  • Experience with audiovisual standards, device interconnections, and troubleshooting and repair techniques, such as AES (Audio Engineering Society) standards.

What You Will Need

  • Basic familiarity with audio/video digitization and preservation standards.
  • Familiarity with audio/video post-production workflows, including experience using sophisticated editing applications such as Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, Audition, DSP-Quattro, and DaVinci Resolve Knowledge of digital audio and video formats and codecs, such as WAV, MP3, Uncompressed, MOV, ProRes, MP4, etc.
  • Knowledge of digital preservation trends and standard processes.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team shooting live events.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience converting analog audio, video, and/or film source content to digital formats using a wide range of professional hardware and software technologies.
  • Experience scanning/digitizing open-reel film scanning and digitization experience desirable.
  • Familiarity with 8/16/35mm motion picture film production and/or projection.
  • Familiarity with fundamentals of digital storage (disk vs. tape, RAID levels, etc.) and computer networking.
  • Experience in video and photographic production using HD and 4K cameras.
  • Familiarity with live event recording techniques using multiple cameras, microphones, audio/video mixers, digital recorders, and wireless devices to achieve professional, high-quality results.
