Location - Pasadena, CA (onsite requirement)
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $50/hr-$70/hr + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
Responsibilities:

  • The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Leading the entire development cycle from conceptualization through the delivery of hardware for test and subsequent integration:
  • Researching design approaches and concepts
  • Tracking and reporting performance against requirements
  • Exploring the feasibility of fabrication with a Manufacturing Engineer
  • Coordinating with Test Engineer before and during the test phase
  • Duties will include:
  • Developing and generating CAD assemblies, parts, and fabrication drawings
  • Carrying out analyses on components and subassemblies using FEM and spreadsheet techniques
  • Generating presentation materials for reviews and presenting at required intervals (PDR, CDR, etc.)
  • Writing assembly documentation, including selecting and mandating inspection steps
  • Shepherding the delivered hardware through assembly, test, and integration

  • Core creative ability with an eye on realistic solutions following brainstorming/conceptual phase
  • Collaboration skills to communicate and share work product; ability to respond to changes following constructive peer review (internal and external)
  • Ability to balance the concerns of technical requirements; feasibility/ease of manufacturing and inspection; complexity of qualification testing; cost of effort; and schedule impact
  • Serve as a center of communication between the various disciplines involved throughout the mechanism development life cycle

Qualifications:Required Skills:

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of experience
  • Must have broad expertise or knowledge in:
  • Space mechanism design, integration, and testing:
  • Bearings
  • Gears and gear systems, particularly planetary and harmonic
  • Motors, particularly DC brushless and stepper
  • Rotary sensors
  • Rotary seals
  • Energy storage devices, such as springs
  • Powered release devices, such as pin-pullers
  • Widely used materials, coatings, and manufacturing techniques
  • Design for kinematic and pseudo-kinematic behavior

  • Other motion elements, both linear and rotary
  • GD&T for fully dimensioned and partially dimensioned, CAD-linked drawings
  • SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation Tools
  • Hands-on hardware experience, particularly assembly, test, and troubleshooting
  • Development cycle of space flight systems
  • Excellent writing, documentation, and presentation skills
  • Microsoft Office Tool Suite
