Overview:
i3 is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a focus on additive manufacturing to join our growing team in Huntsville, AL. This role will require you to be organized with exceptional attention-to-detail. You will collaborate with manufacturing engineers, technicians, and other key essential team members supporting advanced manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
- Develop new hardware, software, and processes for advanced manufacturing.
- Operate 3D printing & process equipment for printed component fabrication.
- Monitor operating parameters on production builds such as build times, early identification of defects, and material consumption rate.
- Execute additive finishing operations including powder and support removal, cleaning, and part handling.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, optical laser, electrical, and build issues.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance.
- Utilize measurement tools (micrometer, caliper, surface plate etc.) to ensure high quality inputs and outputs, including post-print inspection and post-processing inspection.
- Support the 3D printing process for: rapid prototyping, production parts and tooling.
- Work alongside an interdisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to analyze in-situ data as well as post-print material characteristics and rapidly iterate on improving the printing technology.
- Perform failure analysis and investigation into prints, printheads, and printers to identify and implement solutions.
- Shall be proficient in hand, power, and pneumatic tools such as drills, chisels, taps.
- Be an active contributor within a team of engineers who perform the design, development, and testing of all facets of the additive process.
- Lead or assist with proposals and projects that advance the state-of-the-art of additive manufacturing, and that seek to transition additive manufacturing technology to our DoD and industrial sponsors.
- Process sensing & control.
- Data analysis (including with machine learning and artificial intelligence).
- Drive and identify projects to make the printer platforms more robust and repeatable based on machine issues, failed builds, and sensor monitoring/in process data acquisition.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred. Candidates with additional relevant experience in lieu of degree and/or currently enrolled in an accredited university may be considered.
- Ability to lift 50lbs manual dexterity/skilled in operating machinery, hand/power tools.
- Affinity for a fast-paced environment with changing directives and moderate levels of ambiguity.
- Ability to qualify and maintain appropriate certifications for Ammunition and Explosives (A&E) hands-on work including: AvMC A&E Handler certification.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Desired Skills:
- 5+ years of experience in the aerospace, military, automobile race industry, marine, energy, oil and gas or similar industry.
- Proficient in inspection methods: surface plate, calipers, micrometers, height gauge.
- Experience with operating machine tools: Mills, Lathe.
- Experience with hazardous materials and 3D printing.
