Job Description
The Throughput Operations Manager is a role that has a direct impact on building optimal patient throughput and experience. This position will be an internal consultant focusing on strategic deployment of throughput. This role actively applies and tactically infuses strategic thinking, innovation, lean improvement principles, and change management tactics to drive novel and creative methods to solve organizational problems hindering streamlined, integrated operations within and among the key areas of the organization. With excellent inter-personal and communication skills, this individual will use their abilities to develop and implement a vision at macro and micro levels, supported with an analytical framework, to drive sustainable growth and optimize throughput.
This role is intended to provide short- and long-term consultation efforts to model for new and existing leaders. Duties include (but not limited to): leading, facilitating, coaching, and/or contributing to strategic plan and associated deployment plans, managing operational improvement efforts, facilitating cross-functional teams to develop cost-effective methods to enhance operations, and developing/interpreting statistical information and reports.
This individual is responsible for contributing as a consulting partner to our institution, patients, and families to continuously foster and develop an efficient and sustainable business model, one in which centers upon the ongoing development of our people and transforming the way we think.
The Throughput Operations Manager works closely with Senior Leadership as a lead facilitator in improvement activities that are strategically aligned with organizational goals, along with creating an improvement mindset. Provides facilitation and coaching on multiple improvement areas that span across departments impacting the system, not just point improvements. This position reports to Director of Throughput Operations.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides initial evaluation of local operations as assigned and develops prioritized action plans throughout the organization.
  • Develops improvement models appropriate to strategic goals identified in collaboration with leadership and local steering committees throughout the organization.
  • Provides mentorship to local leadership teams and Strategic Operations Consultants. This includes the mentoring and modeling of data sharing and justification for requested resources.
  • Consults to provide a departmental infrastructure necessary as a foundation for sustainable growth.
  • Provides consultation/recommendation to metrics, and mentors local leadership team to ID format for data reporting and goal setting.
  • Acts as a liaison to Center for Quality and Safety in identification of necessary resources and support related to ongoing process improvement and introduction of LEAN concepts throughout organization.
  • Consults and collaborates as an active member with Executive(s), Senior Director(s), Director(s), and Manager(s) to design, plan, and prioritize key strategies for the assigned area aligned to the organization’s vision and emphasizing the realization of measurable results related to access, experience, quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Develops and leads through execution, the end-to-end approach of key initiatives that include strategic implementation, operational improvements, and technological integration into workflows intra- and inter- departmentally. This includes the continuous design and development of an infrastructure necessary as a foundation for sustainable growth.
  • Leads large cross-functional change programs and provides subject matter expertise and industry best practices related to transformation and operational improvement (e.g., Lean). Develops hypotheses and supervises project teams in observations, gathering data, defining, and executing required analyses, identifying issues and problems and recommending the approach to address them.
  • Builds relationships with leaders, management, clinicians, and staff throughout the institution. Continuously develops leaders and staff on change philosophy, project management and initiative implementation methodology to support ongoing personal development.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of internal (intra-, inter- departmental) and hospital-wide communication necessary to promote and share strategic priorities and objectives, goals, progress, and individual contribution to these goals.
  • Consults with and mentors staff of assigned clinical department/business unit.
  • Models behavior to build a work environment that attracts, retains, and engages highest quality staff and proactively addresses issues with staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related discipline, business, engineering, organizational development, behavioral science, or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred (MHA, MBA and/or MSN).
  • Minimum 3 years leading lean initiatives and kaizen events required.
  • Inpatient, perioperative and/or Emergency Department experience preferred.
  • Management experience driving operational change and/or strategic growth with demonstrated, measurable outcomes required.
  • Working knowledge of hospital operations, supply systems, revenue cycle, billing, and Epic systems required.
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership skills, and ability to work with a team, excellent written and oral communication skills, and excellent organizational skills, understanding of financial budgets and reports, knowledge of hospital information systems.
