Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is seeking an Ocean Policy Manager to join our team working to protect New England’s environment for all people. The Manager will work closely in the organization’s Ocean Conservation program with an interdisciplinary team of staff to a dvance CLF’s work on sustainable fisheries, marine mammal protection, ocean habitat protection, and other strategic objectives.

This position can be based in any of the following CLF’s regional offices (Boston, MA; Concord or Portsmouth, NH; or Portland, ME), with some flexibility to work remotely within New England.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies in collaboration with the Ocean Conservation team and external partners as appropriate;
  • Lead policy analysis and research in the areas of marine fisheries management and other ocean conservation areas;
  • Manage the research and writing of reports, papers, and other materials ;
  • Represent CLF at public meetings and provide oral and or written comments on policy, regulation, and other advocacy objectives;
  • Participate in strategic outreach to elected officials and other decision-makers to advance the strategic objectives of the Ocean Conservation program;
  • Build alliances and participate in coalitions among community groups, public officials, business interests, and advocacy organizations around specific advocacy initiatives;
  • Write public education materials and public-facing communication pieces such as op-eds, and blogs and help inform communication strategies;
  • Support outreach to media and stakeholders;
  • Conduct data management and analysis including geospatial analysis, web mapping or other tasks;
  • Working in close collaboration with the Development Department and the Ocean Program Director, participate in fundraising activities including meetings with donors and foundation staff and contributing to foundation reports and proposals and other fundraising materials;
  • Mentor and manage interns, students, and junior staff members;
  • Contribute to CLF’s strategic priorities and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and organizational excellence; and
  • As applicable, develop and manage project budgets.

What you’ll need

We are looking for a motivated self-starter that is able to work both independently and as a productive team member. To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience in oceans policy analysis, research, and advocacy;
  • An undergraduate degree in a related field (a master’s degree is preferred);
  • A passion and commitment to ocean conservation and CLF’s mission;
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to put your analysis into writing that is easily understood;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to communicate to racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to take initiative, solve problems, assess priorities, and manage a variety of activities in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong administrative capabilities, including proficiency with Microsoft Office; and
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Salary & Benefits

CLF offers a competitive salary, an extensive benefits plan, and an open and accepting work environment where differences are highly respected. The base salary for the position is $75,000 if based in Boston and $68,000 if based in a CLF office outside of MA; actual salary will reflect experience, qualification, and where the selected candidate is based.
