Overview:
Job Summary

Assists Store Management in planning, coordinating and managing the store operations so as to control costs, meet targeted labor, maintain projected profit margins, meet or exceed sales goals, provide a pleasant and safe shopping experience for customers and a safe professional working environment for employees. Performs all duties required of a Grocery Department All Purpose Clerk in addition to assisting with management responsibilities. Consistently provides friendly, courteous customer service to internal and external customers. Performs other related work.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers. Maintains and encourages an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis of taking care of the customer.
  • Works with Store Management to learn duties and responsibilities of managing the store.
  • Assists in managing the Grocery department, ensuring compliance with WinCo Foods’ Company Policies, State and Federal Laws and the store’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Supervises, motivates, trains and assists in the hiring of Grocery Department personnel. Monitors employee performance, recommends personnel action such as hiring, termination, layoff and disciplinary action. Assists with scheduling personnel according to coverage needs and service level, maintaining a safe and secure work environment, etc.
  • Maintains and encourages an atmosphere of fast, friendly, courteous customer service, etc.
  • Shows enthusiasm and a positive attitude toward fellow employees and customers. Leads by example.
  • Works with Store Management to monitor the hour to hour store appearance and conditions to ensure high standards of cleanliness, efficiency and productivity are met. Demonstrates understanding of store priorities and anticipates changes.
  • Maintains cleanliness and eye-appeal of work area, storage area, equipment and retail displays according to company policy and legal regulations; and cleans work area by mopping, sweeping, taking out garbage, etc.
  • Maintains a safe/secure work environment and ensures compliance with security policies.
  • Ensures proper merchandising of product by understanding schematics, merchandising of advertised and special items, proper signing procedures and meeting customer demand.
  • Coordinates with Store Management to evaluate and implement store merchandising plans.
  • Monitors employee effectiveness and productivity to ensure efficient labor utilization in the grocery department.
  • Performs store personnel functions as necessary including operating checkstand equipment such as scales, scanners, and cash registers.
  • Breaks down freight by moving product, placing it in inventory, operating fork lift, etc.
  • Performs delegated Store Management responsibilities in the absence of Store Management or as assigned.
  • Sets an example of personal integrity, appearance and ethical business practices which provides a standard of conduct for all store personnel.
  • Works to ensure safety and control general liability and workers’ compensation costs.
  • Assists Store Management in achieving or exceeding projected labor and productivity goals.
  • Performs all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Completes the Manager Apprentice classroom and on the job training program.
Requirements
Education:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
Experience:
  • Minimum of one (1) year working in a fast paced high volume retail environment.
  • Demonstrating effective utilization of excellent verbal, written, electronic and inter-personal communication skills.
  • Effectively communicating with co-workers and customers and following written instructions.
  • Providing leadership through skills in interpersonal communication, management of people, customer and employee relations, analysis, planning orders, judgment, reaction to business activity, etc.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of overall company practices, an in-depth understanding of policies/procedures and the ability to judge/react to customer and employee needs while maintaining composure.
  • Conducting visual inspections, read reports, computer printouts, screen, etc.
  • Performing basic math (add, subtract, divide and multiply) and computing weights and measures; ability to compute weights and measures and calculate profit margins.
  • Operating computers and windows software.
Ability to:
  • Consistently provide world class customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Learn and understand the duties and responsibilities of all aspects of production within the Grocery Department.
  • Perform supervisory skills (e.g., interviewing, scheduling, hiring, counseling, training, disciplining, etc.)
  • Effectively utilize excellent verbal, written, electronic and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Complete the Manager Apprentice classroom and on the job training program.
  • Perform safe/quick movements and operate related equipment with manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Perform duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards with respect to related procedures, equipment (e.g., knives, cookers), and work aides.
  • Work around machinery emitting heat and cold conditions.
  • Have knowledge of all areas of store departments.
  • Learn product variability, perishability, safety and sanitation procedures and department policies.
  • Conduct visual inspections and read reports, manuals, etc.
  • Calculate inventory.
  • Proper handling of related food products per State and County laws, and WinCo standards.
  • Operate checkstand equipment such as scales, scanners, and cash registers.
  • Stand for long periods of time, walk and move rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently.
  • Reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 lbs. within the range of floor level to overhead frequently.
  • Push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks containing product of substantial weight.
  • Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must be at least 21 years old
Machines and Equipment Operated:
  • Computer terminal and office machines.
  • Cash registers, garbage and trash compactors, cardboard bailers, pallet jacks, hand trucks, fork lift.
Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:
  • Experience in a role with formal supervision responsibilities managing performance and/or completion of supervisory training, coursework or education.
  • Experience in a role with product management responsibilities including all aspects of inventory, display and maintenance of products within a specific department.
