Job description

This is semi-skilled manual work requiring the application of skills and knowledge above the basic laboring level. Work is characterized by advanced manual tasks to include the operation of light duty trucks and less complex automotive type equipment, riding lawn mowers, the use of specialized machines, such as hand and power tools, and the use of construction equipment. Employees in this position are required to work inside and outside, year-round, sometimes in inclement weather. Employees in the position also must be available for weekends, nights, and split shifts as needed to cover special events including emergency after hours calls to the property. Due to the facilities serviced by an employee in this position, a selected candidate does need to meet the State of Florida good moral character and Level II background screening standards (Florida State Statutes 435.01-435.06) to be eligible.

Salary: $15.91 - $21.40 Hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Be a self-motivated individual able to carry out assignments without direct supervision for periods of time.
  • Be able to examine, evaluate and determine the proper course of action to be able to repair, replace and improve a wide variety of maintenance tasks.
  • Have one year of construction or grounds maintenance experience using small tools and construction equipment including but not limited to: various types of drills, circular saws, chain saws, grinders, motorized hedge trimmers, edger’s, line, and blade trimmers.
  • Have experience, comfort, and stability working above the ground on ladders and in buckets.
  • Be able to lift sixty (60) pounds.
  • Be able to respond to tenant complaints and requests tactfully and respectfully.
  • Be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, an applicant must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Have experience installing, texturing, and painting drywall.
  • Have a working knowledge of automated irrigation systems.
  • Have experience installing vinyl and tile flooring products and drywall walls.
  • Have experience maintaining residential and commercial HVAC systems.
  • Have some basic supervisory experience.
  • Have some computer knowledge.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

The successful candidate must be either a resident of the City of St. Petersburg as of his or her date of appointment or establish primary residency within the city limits of St. Petersburg within six months of completing the probationary period. Furthermore, if the successful candidate is employed in this classification, he or she must reside within the city limits of the City of St. Petersburg. This requirement is not applicable to current City employees who were hired before October 20, 1997.
