The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a motivated and hard-working individual to join the Maintenance Crew in Naches, WA. The Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will need to be able to hit the ground running and lead an experienced team of Maintenance professionals responsible for performing a variety of highway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance. This experienced technician will lead by example and display a strong ability to work under pressure in demanding conditions and maintain a safe and clean work environment. In this role, you must be dedicated to safety while coordinating and preforming daily work activities which include heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions. This position may occasionally supervise a crew in the absence of the highway maintenance supervisor.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:


  • Plan, schedule, organize, and direct the performance of budget and maintenance activities to accomplish the work.
  • Serve as the crew lead of a maintenance team performing such work as inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining culverts, catch basins, and ditches; asphalt repairs of roadways; repairing guardrail and roadway surfaces; blading shoulders and removing debris; plowing snow and sanding/de-icing roads; and cutting brush.
  • Patrol and inspect assigned highway and right of ways, documenting and reporting deficiencies of the roadway.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel with other area sections, White Pass, Toppenish and Selah.
  • Document daily work and complete status reports.
  • Assist supervisors with inventory of maintenance items, including ordering and tracking materials.
  • Train others in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
  • Lead crew during winter snow and ice operations, which includes directing crews on amounts and methods of applying winter chemicals and operating trucks with sander equipment.
  • Utilize personal computer and tablet to maintain accurate records and reports for personnel, equipment, inventory, and materials.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of heavy equipment used in road maintenance with two (2) years of experience operating and transporting heavy equipment such as a dump truck with plow, sander and deicer/anti-icing system, grader, excavator and/or snowblower.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2, or Maintenance Specialist or two (2) years of experience as a Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2, or equivalent combination of experience.
  • Commercial Driver License Class A with N endorsement and without air brakes restriction.
  • A valid medical certificate.
  • First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Proficient in operating 26,000 to 54,000 GVW dump trucks in the performance of routine highway maintenance and adverse weather conditions.
  • A valid Traffic Control Flagger Card with experience performing traffic control per M54-44 or MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Proven leadership skills and abilities.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Set an example with regular attendance and be prompt when reporting to work.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • High School Graduation or GED certificate, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of state highways, roadsides, and right of ways of the surrounding area.
  • Experience hauling/transporting heavy equipment.
  • Understanding and experience dealing with public/private owned fleet and rental equipment.
  • Experience resolving conflict or enforcing policies.
  • Willingness to encourages development and be a mentor.

  • In additional to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 4% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2023.
