Maintenance Mechanic – Port of Wilmington

HIRING RANGE: $44,298 – $53,478

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Perform duties to maintain, repair, and upgrade equipment, vehicles, and machines used by Port employees; and support Port operations as needed.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

  • Work under the direction of designated supervisor in a cooperative flexible team environment.
  • Encourage and follow safe work practices and safety policies and regulations
  • Equipment and vehicles to be maintained and operated include but are not limited to: container handlers, lift trucks, automotive and truck vehicles, construction equipment, utility carts, material handling attachments, and all other Port equipment, vehicles, and machinery. Maintenance work is performed inside buildings and outside in the field
  • Monitor and inspect equipment for proper function and safe operation
  • Analyze equipment malfunctions and diagnose mechanical failures and problems. Must be able to read electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Determine parts, materials, tools, methods, and services needed for project work
  • Clean and disassemble equipment and components
  • Conduct scheduled service and perform preventive maintenance
  • Repair, adjust, rebuild, replace, and upgrade parts and assemblies in all equipment and vehicle systems, including but not limited to the following: mechanical; electrical; hydraulic; pneumatic; diesel, gasoline, and propane engine; electric motors and drives; transmission; final drive; fuel delivery and injection; ignition; suspension, chassis, steering, and tires; operator cab; brakes; exhaust; control; etc.
  • Offer and communicate ideas to improve the service life and level of service of equipment and vehicles, reduce long-term expenses, and maximize utilization of maintenance and capital resources
  • Operate maintenance and machine shop equipment such as hand and power tools and machinery, equipment lifts, cranes and winches, presses, drills, welding equipment, grinders, tire-changing machine, parts cleaners, steam and pressure cleaners, etc.
  • Perform rigging for equipment component lifting and disassembly/assembly
  • Perform minimal metal welding and fabrication

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, plus two years’ experience in equipment and vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair required
  • Basic reading, writing, and math skills required
  • Must be proficient in the use of business software, such as: word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications
  • Comprehensive knowledge regarding equipment preventative and corrective maintenance required
  • Although not required, machinist experience is highly preferred (efficient use of lathes and milling machines)
  • Welding and fabrication experience are preferred (i.e.: Stick, MIG & TIG)
  • Skills and experience are required to troubleshoot, disassemble, repair/rebuild/replace, reassemble, and adjust equipment components and systems
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bending consistently, and working in awkward body positions is required
  • Conditions include working in maintenance shop and busy cargo traffic areas, with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, grease, oil, and adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to effectively use all PPE equipment and lift up to 70lbs
  • Must provide own hand tools, with sockets and wrenches up to one and a quarter inch size
  • Ongoing training in areas of specialty a must
  • Overtime, holidays, and weekend work will be required
  • Must have a valid drivers license and meet TWIC security requirements
  • Must be comfortable working at heights up to 50 feet on occasions

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Frequently exposed to dirt, dust, grease, oil, fluids, vibrations, and hot and cold seasonal weather. Work is mostly conducted on concrete shop floors, warehouse environments, outside, and in confined machinery spaces. Strenuous physical demands are required to safely access all areas and parts of large heavy equipment by means of steps and vertical ladders, as well as handle equipment components, parts, tires, etc. Must be able to effectively use all PPE equipment, machinery, and lift up to 75 pounds. Must be able to safely operate all involved equipment, machinery, and tools. Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bending consistently, working in confined spaces with limited access, and working in awkward body positions.
