Mail Processing Driver Lead
Day Shift: Monday - Friday | 6:30am – 3:00pm

About this opportunity
This position reports to the Consolidated Mail Services (CMS) Presort Day Shift Supervisor to deliver exceptional mail services; reduce the overall cost of government; and set a standard for continuous improvement. The duties and responsibilities of this position play an important part in achieving the goals of the Department of Enterprise Services (DES), by requiring the employee to understand the needs of our customers, be proactive in customer service and to perform the essential functions of this position. The incumbent in this position will be an expert on all mail equipment and jobs processed by CMS and is responsible for training new staff. This position will serve as the back-up to the Program Coordinator.

Work is performed in a warehouse/mail processing environment. You must be willing and able to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods in noisy conditions without loss of concentration. More physical requirements include the ability to lift, move, or transfer mail tubs and packages weighing up to 70 lbs.

About the division
The Business Resources Division (BRD) within the DES provides a number of services to state agencies, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Services provided by the division include Print and Mail Services, Fleet Operations, and Surplus Operations.

DES provides centralized leadership in efficiently and cost-effectively managing resources necessary to support the delivery of state government services. The mission of DES is to implement a world-class, customer-focused organization that provides valued products and services to government and state residents.

Duties

Some of what you will be doing
Lead mailing presorting, metering, and manifesting activities

  • Has the ability to run all jobs and machines in presort section
  • Assists and trains other staff members in presorting, metering, and manifesting activities
  • Operates, maintains, and configures computerized OCR/BCR sorter and SendPro 3000 mail metering machines
  • Troubleshoots machine issues and is able to determine when to engage vendor technicians
  • Starts-up and understands all computer systems necessary to run the Bell & Howell sorter
  • Cleans the OCR ink-jet printers to ensure Intelligent Mail Barcode’s (IMB’s) are correct
  • Ensures the mail flow process is accurate and performed in a timely manner
  • Understands the needs of our customers and is pro-active in customer service
Coordinates staffing and expedites presorting, metering, and shipping activities
  • Coordinates staffing and assigns work to employees on an ongoing basis
  • Instructs and assigns daily duties on the Presort floor
  • Spot checks employees work throughout the day
  • Checks other operators for correct dates and postage
  • Gives guidance when errors arise
  • Guides the workflow within Outgoing Presort
  • Submits electronic Mail.dat to the USPS for the OCR mailings
  • Prepares tags and placards for each corresponding GPC and tray
Works in conjunction with Presort team to achieve mail quality control
  • Adheres to all current documented quality control procedures
  • Frequently checks mail for correct dates, presort slug, address quality and proper envelopes prior to processing it through the sorter
  • Understands which customer profile to use when processing mail
  • Works with the Supervisor to ensure staff adhere to quality standards

Qualifications

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED
    AND two (2) years of experience in the mail processing, mail shipping, delivering or mail equipment industries and a working knowledge of the USPS regulations regarding First Class Mail
  • A license valid under Washington state law free of serious traffic violations
  • Must have the ability to lift/transport/move mail trays, tubs and/or packages weighing up to 70 lbs

Preferred/Desired Qualifications
  • Have at least six (6) months of lead and/or supervisory experience
  • Mail Design Professional (MDP) - If an employee is not MDP certified upon hire, the hiring manager/supervisor may allow up to six months in order to attain certification
