Job Description
The Broad Institute is a key partner in the All of Us Research Project, a large-scale multi-center effort to sequence and characterize the genomic data of 1M people using second-generation (short read) sequencing technology and ~15k people using third-generation (long read) technology. We are seeking a motivated and collaborative scientist to join our team in developing novel methods for the utilization of long-read data (particularly structural variation) in downstream analyses of population diversity, variation in medically relevant genes, and genetic association studies.
As a computational scientist, you will collaborate with other group members to conceive and develop innovative and computationally-intensive tools to enable the effective biological study of genomic variation derived from long reads, creating QC measures to ensure input data is suitable for the new methods, and compare results to those obtained with existing software tools. You will work closely with other computational scientists and personnel in partnered labs to deploy these tools for use in the All of Us Research Project and other large-scale population genetics analyses.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in computational biology/statistical genetics/machine learning. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, C++, or Rust is required. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills, are also essential for this role.
*** PLEASE INCLUDE A COVER LETTER WITH YOUR APPLICATION ***
Responsibilities
  • Develop novel computational tools for analyzing and utilizing long-read data (e.g. integration with other large-scale datasets, characterizing novel genomic sequence, assembling high-diversity loci in the population, enabling GWAS/eQTL studies to utilize discovered variation)
  • Collaborate with partnered labs and other scientific partners to design and analyze experiments
  • Present results to both computational and non-computational audiences, both internally and externally
  • Publish novel methods in collaboration with Broad scientists
Skills and Abilities
  • Must be forward-thinking and innovative, with a nimble scientific/technical mind, able to rapidly develop and execute on creative solutions
  • Proficiency in at least two programming languages, such as Python, R, C++, or Rust
  • Strong foundation with statistical models and/or machine learning
  • Excellent communication skills in written and verbal form
  • Familiarity with genomics/transcriptomics and/or long-read sequencing data (such as Pacific Biosciences or Oxford Nanopore) is desirable but not required
Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent years of experience in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Biological Sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in the development of computational methods for use by others.
The Broad Institute is an amazing place - we apply our deep knowledge of human genetics and computational methods to empower a revolution in bio-medicine and accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease. Through our partnerships with MIT, Harvard, and the Harvard teaching hospitals, we've become a worldwide hub of cutting-edge biomedical science.
The Long Reads group within the Data Sciences Platform at the Broad Institute tackles methods development needs arising from long-read sequencing data. We work in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment, connected to groups across the Broad community and to clinical and academic researchers from around the globe.
